Sometimes people get knocked for sidestepping political issues, other times people get knocked for jumping straight in even though they aren't as experienced with the topic. I appreciate honesty any way it's written, and in this case, it was relatable for me.

Walking In The Snow and the last two tracks are 3 of the 5 best rap songs I've heard in half a decade lol.

It was something I needed to write and it came out in the way I needed it to come out. All criticism is valid and valued, but I couldn't change it now any more than I could have when writing it.
If nothing else, seeing pots hold his tongue was something to behold.

“ . A simple description of the music with a few links at the end would be a disservice to the importance of the album in the context surrounding its release. It's one thing to dislike the way the concept was executed or say it could have been done to a fuller extent (as Romulus implied), but I definitely wouldn't say it's unnecessary. I'd actually argue the opposite. I can't imagine trying to review an album like this and not try to relate it to current events and personal introspection.”
right, but what I argue is that it doesn’t accomplish this. the way it tethers the album to current events isn’t firmly rooted at all imo and the introspection is unabashedly shallow.
and a few links at the end would be much better than merely the sentiment of “idk what to do so I’ll do nothing”. if it’s not your banner to wave, don’t wave it, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be an ally in other ways

it’s a v honest review conceptually but just because it’s honest doesn’t mean it’s above critique (as chan admits in his comment above). if anything it invites itself to be criticized
this will probably be the flagged review for what will be a very talked-about release that will probably get a couple hundred thousand views (not a lot, but it’s something). if it dips its toes into the sentiments of the moment then I think it’s very fair to scrutinize it a bit, regardless of whether or not chan feels compelled to make any edits

He certainly could have given more background and tied it into a broader view of what's unfolded lately, but he did admit that it's sort of a visceral reaction to the music and the situation; almost an involuntary reflex. I'm sure he'd agree with you that there are ways to contribute even if it's "not your banner to wave".
This is the sort of review people are bound to instantly relate to or find hokey. I don't blame anyone for their opinion and think you're well within the right to critique the piece (and your points are perfectly valid), but I write in this style all the time, so I personally was attracted to it as a simple matter of preference/bias and nothing more.

I do disagree with your assessment of my attitude at least. The review is about a moment that lasted perhaps 10 minutes and is not meant to be representative beyond that. If that is shallow then it is because I am shallow and have told you it honestly.

tbh I’m not in a position to criticize your attitude because I can’t read minds. the tone of the review conveyed what it conveyed (to me) and I commented on it. I doubt it’s wholly indicative of who you are or a simulacrum of your beliefs. I still like you as a writer. just not this piece: it irks me, and I don’t get why so many users are uncritically brown-nosing it.
anyway this isn’t really my banner to wave either so I’ll disengage

I'd say there are about equal amounts of praise and criticism at this point. But okay then.

logged in to say I like this review. there will be many thinkpieces unpacking the ways this album relates to the current moment and they will be written on sites that are more appropriate than sputnik, lmao. there's value in an unvarnished, open write-up like this that's more about the individual reaction than the entire societal one, which again, hard thing to unpack in four paragraphs and change
also I would slap a 5 on this if ooh la la wasn't present, song is buns

with the exception of rom, most comments preceding my initial ones were mainly one-sentence adorations. not really the point tho. sry if a nerve was struck, wasn't really my intention

I'm currently penning a 3,000 word essay that will explain and justify my full thoughts on the review. My original comment was just a placeholder.

I guess the three comments above me already answer to Johnny's "one-sentence adorations" but, yeah, not every comment has to be a deep critical thinking analysis piece Johnny.
I just liked what i read.

Would this band be worth a discography run for someone who isn't a big hip-hop fan?
