Insta 4s, now that's what I like to see. I got a vicarious thrill from you witnessing you hear this for the first time.

the one album I insta-5'd was close to a world below. I wasn't even to the title track yet and was like holy fuck this is the best thing I've ever heard, 5. I've jammed that album probably 80-100 times and I've never even considered lowering it. Sometimes ya just know

I almost 5d that just for when the drums kick in on the first track

Yeah I was really probably like 3 or 4 tracks in before I know it was just beyond god-tier
Actually I've insta-5'd 2 albums. That and Symbolic

You won't find me arguing with either of those picks. I haven't been rating for long enough to have something new come along and do it to me straight away, but when I retrospectively rated Pernicious Enigma/The Maniacal Vale a couple years after hearing them for the first time I couldn't think of giving them anything but a 5

Yeah I guess when I joined I fived stuff that I had already considered classics for years, like rage against the machine s/t and half of Floyd's discog. But those weren't "true" insta-5s...like 5ing something after 1 listen. It's rare but when it happens its crazy man. Like there are a good number of albums that I could probably say "changed my life." Either that or significantly shaped my taste.
Symbolic and ctawb are up there. As is floyd and rage.

That's twice as many as me I suppose, but I always see you commenting on stuff you haven't rated, so I guess that's skewed my perception

i feel like i cant rate something i havent heard in years just going off of memory alone because my memory is terrible. lately i've been revisiting a lot of stuff that doesn't quite hold up, so i feel even more justified in this position. but they'll be rated if/when i listen again. as for new stuff, i feel the need to give it more than one spin
also, by definition i cannot comment on all the crap i have rated that doesnt even have a review thread :[

I also insta 5'd Close to a World Below and None So Vile. Both of which I still consider top shelf DM, but can't keep them at a 5. Agreed with ford that 5's should be a "change my life" album.
Milo your review gives this album justice. m/

Damn this riffs hard, dat bass too. Nice balance between tech, heaviness and space-tinged progisms.

Cheers Jay! 5s are a tricky business. Something like I'll Sleep When You're Dead completely changed my taste in music, so I've got it at a 5 even though I'll concede that it's got some flaws.
Demon coming in hot to lift the average to 3.9, I can feel it
