I'll admit I like the debut albums by Earth Crisis and Integrity even better than Hatebreed, but the importance of Hatebreed for people getting into heavier music is not to be underestimated and what they do, they do very well

Hatebreed's just another one of those easy target bands for the internet dorks to shit on

if someone gets into "heavier" music via five finger death punch, does that mean ffdp is a good band?

"Good" or "bad" is not the issue here; that's entirely subjective anyways. There's a time and place for everything, there's something for everyone and as a listener we aren't forced to listen to anything

For an ample amount of people from a certain generation "Perseverance" might've been an eye-opener getting into heavy music just for the sheer fact that they came across that track and it connected with them at the right time. They might be fans for life, they may move on to things they like even better...doesn't matter, but the music of the band at one point in time spurred them into a certain direction. Whether you find it good or lame, for this the band deserves its inclusion in the greater history of the scene and genre.

They're popular bands, so they must be doing something right for plenty of people.
