I'll probably lower my rating on this after a bit but I'm in the honeymoon period with this record right now. Similarly to Charli's latest this whole thing just feels so tight, even if it isn't written as an 'album' per se.
I need to dig back into 1989, it left a bad taste in my mouth from what I remember and I can hardly see using it as standard for which to measure modern pop albums against.
I really like the way you reconciled your supposition that Carly is a 'singles artist' in the last paragraph, you do a good job of conveying her appeal

alright sowing, i'll give it a go. really thought dedication was extremely underwhelming after the incredible emotion. whole lot of irony in the album title

dedication grew...i still really like want you in my room, no drug like me, real love, and a handful of others
but it was definitely no emotion, and these b-sides match the euphoria of that

dedication isn't remotely close to emotion. emotion had some of the best pop hooks of last decade, and some really catchy melodious music to boot. dedication is a by-the-numbers pop album by comparison. it's consistent throughout but it doesn't have much going for it outside of a few good songs. i'd go as far as to say that no songs on dedication are as good as the top 5 on emotion
