Death are obviously innovators, both in straight up dm and progdeath, but Gorguts just have this amazingly modernist touch to their music. They just get so dark and heavy and weird compared to Death. Obviously two of the best bands ever though.

Death metal in itself is already a pretty experimental genre, but Gorguts just take it that next step in dissonance and edge. Gorguts is the John Coltrane to Death's Miles Davis.
