I don't see why he can't give his own view of it, representing the album as he engages with it. Would love to see another perspective someone who can reflect on the LGBT themes more personally, but I don't really see how this review shows heteronormativity, as plane said.

I took no offense to it; as someone who has absolutely nothing interesting about his sexual orientation it's entirely possible I'm missing out on some themes/inspiration here. I'm sure that's all plane meant.

I would have taken offense to it, since it literally means "of, relating to, or based on the attitude that heterosexuality is the only normal and natural expression of sexuality". Never seen someone criticized for acting too straight just because their review didn't go into politics and instead discussed the music haha

i think lewis's advice is good for all of us to remember - that there might be stuff we miss about albums due to our identities (perhaps not "miss" but just won't see it in the same way as others). i don't think every review needs to engage with that or even acknowledge it, and i don't think that's what he was saying either, but it is useful to keep in mind and can unlock new critical avenues. not really replying to anyone in particular here, just saying that i appreciate the sentiment.
