Thank you for reviewing this, I was going to write one up myself if no one did. This is my favorite release of his since Sunset Tree. It is incredible.

It's definitely up there, although always thought his stuff post Sunset Tree was still pretty uniformly excellent. Heretic Pride and Goths especially are right up there with the best they've put out

Goths was DEFINITELY up there for me. But the other 2 recent ones were below par

Boy you've got some fair play there, Beat the Champ and Dragons definitely have some catchy tunes, and fun enough to listen to, but I come to the Mountain Goats to cathartically weep, and not just because I was jabbed in the eye with a foreign object.
I'm just curious now if this opens the door to a trade-off in the future between hi and lo fi album cycles for the Goats. Doubt it, but it still feels like a bigger decision to first bring it back then it would be otherwise. Can't uncross the Rubicon.

I didn't like Goths much outside of "Rain in Soho," this worth a jam? Haven't heard anything else from them

This is an incredibly different beast, Lo-fi recorded into a boombox, pretty much just guitar with an occasional synth supplanting it here or there. I love this one, but if you want to jam this, it’s probably best to at least visit All Hail West Texas first to see this more stripped back side of Darnielle’s songwriting and then circle back around to this one.
It’s brilliantly written, but it’s also incredibly un-flashy in the way it goes about it, and if you aren’t in the headspace for it, there’s a chance this one might slide past without as much impression

Can we get this featured? This deserves so much more exposure

last things i would call this are uninspired and derivative

I don't know, sonic similarities are bound to pop up on working with such a contained sound palette, but the songwriting itself feels pretty miles apart from the ol' days.
Songs are way more pulled back and reflective, than the nakedly emotional or cheeky cuts all over a lot of the old stuff. It's not as immediately breathtaking, but it also makes this one grow like a garden in shit (John Darnielle's creative spirit in quarantine)

Wish i didnt miss the tape

Lol how can someone be derivative of their own work

I am currently reading John Darnielles 2nd book. He is a great writer (though my knowledge of literature is little)

I have some knowledge of literature and can confirm he is a great writer.
I preferred Wolf In White Van, but Universal Harvester has a greatly unsettling atmosphere to it.

^ I agree with that assessment. Wolf in White Van ended on a very depressing note.
