This is the album Red fans have been waiting for since I&I. Fun and straightforward, even if the mastering is ass.

These guys have weird averages on here. It's like they release something excellent and follow it up with something totally worthless. Is that really the case?

Stepping outside of my own bias (cause I em all) I'd say yes,..sort of. Innocence and Instinct is their popular hit. Until We Have Faces and Release the Panic were less well-received, so was Gone.

What about Of Beauty?

I feel like this album has a lot of potential - great stadium rock, but goddam, the mixing engineer needs to have his head impaled on a stake for ruining the enjoyment factor.

OBAR would probably be the fans pick for their best. It was a huge return to form for them.

This is their first independent record, if that makes the production a bit more forgivable (It doesn't bother me in the least but to each their own).

It bothers me because the guitar tone is awful - I feel that this kind of music needs a much meatier tone - like what BB have got.

That would be fantastic. I'm sure another album or two will sort out the kinks, but I love records with production a lot worse than this (*ahem Gore).

You think Gore has worse production? I actually got used to that. Perhaps with a few more listens, this will grow! You can definitely tell the band has worked hard on this record, and I want to enjoy it for sure.

yea, with more listens here, the album's production definitely becomes more and more tolerable. Like Lucman said, give it a record or two to work with the kinks and they will have a very solid album on their hands

Mmm, maybe not worse, probably a bad choice of words there, but that record took a good year to click with me. I couldn't stand the production on that at first. This can be amateur at times, but I was never turned off by it.

It's sad because a big guitar tone was something they did really well, love how the guitars sounded on End of Silence and Innocence & Instict (especially the latter had great, original tones). OBaR was pretty cool in that regard but the production was a bit off too. Really don't see how the production on Gore is worse than this

I cannot tell if you're referring to Gone, or the Deftones album Gore lmao.

But yeah. Even if the production is not on par with the former, the content and musicianship overall is still much better. On Gone a lot of the songs like Fracture, Chasing Your Echo and Step Inside The Violence felt unfinished.

The Deftones album haha. Interesting seeing people think this is worse. I've come to really love that album but IDK, I don't see how this could be considered worse production-wise, or so bad that it ruins the entire album.

It's not as terrible as some make it out to be. But you can tell that it makes some songs like From The Ashes sound dated. Even though that's one of the highlights for me.

I agree. I do think this sounds weaker compared to their other albums (with the exception of Release the panic, which is a failure on all fronts) but it isn't as bad as some people are saying. With the production of Gone this would've sound bigger. I think Gone is one of their best produced but unfortunately the songs are hit or miss.

Well-written review. First album from RED I've enjoyed start/finish since I&I. I tried hard to like past couple releases, just couldn't get into it. Declaration has the raw energy, emotion, and artistic direction I wanted from them. I agree with production problems really no excuse for that mix with today's tech. But this still rekindled RED's potential and their next album (given better production direction) could be a true banger.

I'd wager most fans will tell you that I&I is their best, but I think they've written at least two albums better than that one. This seems to be standard Red, just tuned lower, which....I don't think does them any favors.

Also, yeah, the production could stand a bit of clean-up.

I would personally rate their albums thusly:

- Instinct & Innocence / Of Beauty and Rage (tied)

- End of Silence

- Until We Have Faces / Gone (tied)

- Declaration

- Release the Panic
