Okay, I love Veto too, fair enough.
Also, Disc 2 > Disc 1, agreed.

I was thinking about reviewing this but it wouldn't have been for a while since I want to see if my opinion changes at all. I agree with most of your points, especially that the second disc is the stronger of the two.
This album is fantastic, so many good tracks. I think they invoke their inner Bolt Thrower way more on this album than they ever have - that one riff in Tirpitz would be right at home on Those Once Loyal. Truther is heavy as fuck while maintaining some groove, Eradicate riffs for days, Critical Mass is the best cover they've ever done (I absolutely love the vocals), Ubermacht and La Resistance incorporate the electronic bleep bloop brilliantly, the classical on Expatriate and Weakness Leaving My Heart gracefully carry some really weighty tracks, The Sorrows of Victory is a behemoth and is a great incorporation of clean vocals and careful pacing (gib more of dat solo) ... I could keep going. Even March of Retribution is a perfect intro.
I don't really understand why people are seeing this as too much. This is the most dynamic record they've ever done. Sure, it's still HSB at its core - if you didn't want that why the hell are you even listening - but this is the most refreshed and creative they've sounded since Antigone.
Also, this line:
" the all too clinical production which could have benefitted from small amounts of raw grit"
Is the reason why the original mix of Whatever It May Take is the best record they've ever done.

Anyone who prefers Wanderer, Invictus or Iconoclast over this album deserves poop in their cereal, agreed.

Good review.
Album is a huge step up from Wanderer. It's a bit of a chore to get through because of how long it is, but it's definitely solid and the good bits are amazing.

I like this band and so far this album but I never need 100 mins of Heaven Shall Burn.
The Soilwork comparison upthread isn’t a good one. The focus on melodic vocal and guitar lines, a little more dynamics, and less abrasive production lead to a lot less ear fatigue.

The only two things these guys have in common with Soilwork are:
Both bands' ninth albums are double albums
Both bands are melodeath

I’ll probably end up trimming this down to a single album length playlist in the future. Or listening to the two discs desperately over time. No way my ears can listen to their production for the full runtime without wearing out
