I think Tavares made his own production on this, "Hearts of the Moon" sounds old. holy shit, too capable.

In my eyes, the essence of jazz is to improve, but not many musicians do improvisation nowadays, and the ones on the Internet are with uneven quality and capability. So I'm happy about they added the improvisation. now if I really try to look for some decent and thoughtful performers who do not follow the current "modern jazz fusion" trend (I mean funk, hip-hop, synth-simulation) or do not be a boring classic replay, it is not easy. Both saxophone and piano in this are superb, they are conversant with the classic jazz, meanwhile, infused with the perceptual modern power.

Exactly notagenius, I like how it's both respectful of the past and directed towards the future

Regarding remarkable modern stuff that utilizes improv fire! orchestra and all of their affiliates would make the top of my list. Now that shit is fresh.

Otherwise if I wanted something remarkable that is more similar to this style I'd just go to the classics, inner mounting flame will always be a top fav for me. As will classic afrojazz stylings like Cymande but that's a much different vibe.

This is just a tad too derivative of the essentials for my personal liking to be very affecting. It's certainly impressive and I think this kind of emulation isnt as oversaturated as it has been in previous years but it just doesnt do quite enough to move me.

That's just me tho. A long time friend of mine and roommate for a while was a huge jazz aficionado and so I've been a little over-exposed which perhaps makes me a bit critical

there are so many classics from the 70s, so much shit was going on with jazz that decade, and a lot of cool stuff was done with it in the 90s and early 00s with nu jazz, downtempo, acid jazz etc, but pretty much the only remarkable development for the 10s imo is this dark jazz and doomy big band free improv shit like Fire! and Kilimanjaro etc. Nothing much else has excited me too much.

Totally fair Potsy. Fire! has been blowing my mind for the last couple of months and I think they're the most interesting recent jazz band lately.

And, although I love jazz, the genre is so enormous I feel like it would take me 10 more years to fully know and understand it. So maybe I'm just a noob in need of knowledge, idk. I'll go check Kilimanjaro, never got to listen to that band.

Sorry if it sounded like i was insinuating that lol, i'm not. I don't think I'm any kind of expert either, it's just preference, I think passive over-exposure to this particular style makes me feel a bit emotionally detached from it to begin with.

yeah definitely... theres a reason ppl tend to trash talk the radio, and its not because the music is genuine unlistenable garbage

Nah man np I know you weren't insinuating that :-) Yeah I get that, but I'm on the opposite of the spectrum: I wanna know more, yet don't have the time to, so I just formulate my ideas and opinions even though I have a shitton to learn. Almost wish I was over-exposed because the more I dive into jazz, the more I realize my lack of knowledge. It's cool cos bit's a last to dig a genre but it's also daunting to realize how little I know.

At least jazz's in my pie chart so I can look like a connoisseur
