I reckon these guys have a very high-quality album in them. Just gotta step up that songwriting game

Yeah agreed - I think if they wrote two or three EPs each committed to one style, they could come back to the drawing board and pull off this sound a whole lot better

"yes but not when it's generic metalcore chugging"

but see what puzzles me is that I know you're no stranger to metalcore. so much metalcore these days is borrring ass chugging. I'm talking Wage War, Emmure, Of Mice & Men, shit like that. In comparison this is defff not just generic chugging. Plus I thought you were a sucker for atmosphere, and there's a ton of that here!

Where this falls down for me is that the atmosphere lives and dies solely within the atmospheric parts of each song and carries over not at all across the whole record - compare that to something like You Come Before You, where the whole package feels part of the same unbroken mood

Wow. Terrible review. It almost feels like the album hurt the reviewer in some way.

"Boy are the heavy sections on this bad. And transitions are basically non-existent."

Yup. The flatout heavy tracks on this should've been scrapped. They should do more shit like Screaming or Aggressive Evolution. And the title track nails the perfect balance of heavy and moody. Thats the sound they should be expanding on.

Basically this. Maybe if I was a teenager and prior to this thought Disturbed's music slapped I'd say this is the shit, otherwise this is just shit

Johnny, this is a great review!! I felt like the heavy sections were acceptable but nothing incredible. The cleans were sooooooooo predictable though. There were only a couple moments where anything remotely interesting happened. The rest of the singing is a contrived Chino Moreno contest. Like Johnny said, there are some solid parts of this album that are completely overshadowed by absolutely nothing worth remembering. Still a decently fun listen until the songwriting and signing makes my eyes roll back into my skull so far I can see out of my anus. GGs boys

"WHY DO I LOVE THIS SO MUCH"

Because it's fun, varied, and emotive. The only serious critique on it would be that sometimes the songs don't flow perfectly into others. Sure there are some albums that have executed particular styles better, but the combination of instrumentation and production works perfectly for me.

And no, the heavy bits are not generic. I think the disagreement is that some people cannot get into modern metalcore. They immediately dislike it if it's not reminiscent of Converge, Botch, Poison The Well, early ETID, the less mathy bits of Dillinger, Hopesfall, or Fear Before. Otherwise, they just can't beat off to it b/c it's just not their personal blend of lo-fi, black-metal-infused, coffee-house, dark-roasted masturbation.

But there's prolly gonna be a comment within this page alone that's just, "it's shit." Calling that in advance.

That’s a whole lot of assuming you’ve done there mate! ^. I like the production and some of the heavy sections slam! But for me it’s nothing to do with the lack of influence from bands I’ve heard before it’s actually the opposite. The steady Deftones influence is probably my least favourite part of this. Like if I want to listen to those bands I’ll listen to those bands ya know? These guys have a lot of potential to do something rad of their own!

They fully did their own thing on their last album, The Cold Sun. The slower and more atmospheric parts are executed fantastically on that.

And sure it seems like there is some Deftones worship, but after a few listens, you realize they're not really aping Deftones. What they did was integrate the structural contrast between violent aggression and dreamy melodies into their own overall sound. Although, Deftones used that structure, Loathe didn't ape the musicianship or the aesthetic of the production, or even really the lyrical style at all.

Still, to each their own.

Still figuring...I could use listening the guitars better instead of the distorted bass on heavy parts...v cool stuff here though...
