That's a pretty apt analysis.

Main issue with this is that their metalcore elements start to become more of an afterthought as the album goes on, the vibey parts are where the album shines, but then the core comes in and you are interrupted from your coma lol

"I'm excited to listen as I've always liked Deftones' 'sound' more than their actual execution of said sound and songwriting chops"

Dude yes agree jammin, always found deftones to be a good concept with a bad execution

Definitely gonna need more time with this one. First impressions are very mixed. Half the time I'm jamming hard, other half I'm bored hard.

Good review! This album is such a challenging, yet rewarding listen front to back. This album has such a cohesive vibe. I really appreciate the interludes and how the album is pieced together to create a complete experience. I never thought anyone could utilize dynamics better than Deftones, but Loathe has done it after hearing ILIIAITE. I always assumed Deftones would run away with Album of the Year '20, but I'm seriously doubting that now.

As far as criticism goes, I think I'd like Kadeem's screaming to be more natural sounding in the future. It seems like most of his screaming is covered in effects and double tracks.

God I fucking hate it when the cream sounds unnatural.

I mean, I've opened a few bottles of whipped cream that started screaming at me with the voices of the dead. Is that unusual?

Whipped cream is different. The whipping naturally evokes certain reactions.

This sounds like a split album between Deftones and Frontierer where none of the tracks last more than a couple of seconds.

I really loved 1/2 of the music on this record, and I wanted to skip the other half but didn’t. As of now I’m at a 2.5 but we’ll see if it grows.

Still need to give this a listen, but based on the reviews floating around out there, I don't see myself loving or hating this. If it truly is Deftones-core, it will lose some novelty points but still be enjoyable - perhaps in the 3.5 range. Of course I won't know until I give it a spin.
