This is definitely growing on me but I'm still not totally sold. The production issues aren't as bad as I initially thought, the sound isn't quite as rich as on some of their older stuff but the only time it's particularly noticeable is on "Slow Ride Argument" where I can barely make out most of what Cooley is saying. I agree on the frontloading, I think tracks 1, 2, 4, and 5 are my favorites. "Heroin Again" is definitely the weakest overall, "Babies In Cages" is ok, sort of bluesy sound there is a bit different for them, "Grievance Merchants" is pretty good but again weak by Cooley standards. "Awaiting Resurrection" is the one I'm least decided on - a very different sort of piece for them though I wish they had done a little more with it.
I think the overriding issue is that this doesn't say or do a whole ton that American Band didn't, and at the same time the songs are weaker. American Band just felt a lot more vital and also cast the commentary in more interesting, specific stories whereas this one borders on preachy, and also while I agree with most of what they say they're also doing a bit of that thing I hate when people do and act like everything's worse than it's ever been. American Band just felt a bit more nuanced in its portrait of the status quo. While they never say the "T" word on this one, you can tell it's a bit more directed (esp in "Babies In Cages", for example).
So yeah, still a solid work, but not feeling it quite as hard.

Comprehensive bone.
I’m pleased with it. It was never going to top American Band in my eyes and certainly doesn’t have the drive which galvanises that record but it’s still great. It’s a 3.5 from me.

I think 21st century USA is a dud too
honestly this would be a 3 if it weren't for the awesome closer

‘Heroin Again’ is a bit of a cringe, def weakest for me

The first 4 songs on this are great. The rest is pretty lame tbh. I don't give a shit about the political lean, I only care if the songs rock. The last half most definitely does not.

I actually prefer the back half. The piano opener aint my thing, and the second track has that super off-putting vocal harmony.

For me the 2nd track is by far the best on the album

Is Babies in Cages a song about Obama or nah?

Giving this another spin since I'm seeing them live in a couple days, I think I was being a tad harsh - bumped from 3 to 3.5. Eager to hear how these songs come across live.

Show ruled last night, the boys really do know how to rock. Most of these songs came across well live but definitely most of them pale to the classics. They played a great set, 7 out of 9 of this album but most of the rest was from their classic era (they played 7 off Southern Rock Opera which was awesome). Interestingly they didn't play anything from American Band - perhaps that stuff is too similar to this. Great crowd too, they clearly have a seriously dedicated fanbase.

They're absolutely worth it, they play some of their quieter stuff but for the most part they seriously rock out. Played for about 130 min too, no encore, barely any stage banter - no BS. Cooley and Hood pretty much alternated on and off every song so it was a perfect balance between them.

One thing about these guys, they play completely different setlists every night, so there's no way to completely prepare.
