I feel like they make more sense if you've been desensitized to King Diamond albums. They've got the quirk of a macabre stage show, you know, before being raped by death metal/grind aesthetic.

I think I'm referring more to the style than the 'sound' itself. The album itself is centred on a pretty specific lyrical point so to translate that better into song form they've gone the non operatic operatic pirate vox to fill out their stage.
