That so many are calling this album of the decade is so strange to me. It's like a weird cult haha.

There are some great moments, the offering sets the album up for you to expect more, Gods reminded me of Deftones - When Girls telephone boys and seemed very out of place.

Also is the lead singer gently sobbing at the end of blood sport? kinda made me cringe.

I slightly see the Arcane roots thing but Arcane roots kick this bands ass.

Oh yes I agree. I was speaking more to how the pop sound with creative heavy elements thrown in reminded me of Arcane Roots. The singer reminds me of the dude from Bastille, and I hate that band. He definitely gets on my nerves throughout, but the band is quite incredible, especially the drummer.

The Night does not Belong to God is fucking tight. Let's see if the rest of the album comes anywhere close.

this was an incredible review and I can't tell if I'm going to love or hate this when I listen to it. You somehow made 'Hillsong but djent' sound intriguing despite those being two of the worst keywords that can be attached to a band!

This band puts a new visual video on YouTube every other day, if I didn't know better I'd think they have 400 songs.
Anyway, gotta say despite this not being my shit, "The Night Does Not Belong To God" has some good moments.

This is just my kind of music but the album is structured horridly and the songwriting doesn't always hold up. Hopefully the next album will live up to the potential shown here

Came to this review and the comments with what I thought were weird opinions, only to find them repeated here.

I approached this album optimistically because I dug the heavier parts of the songs released before Sundowning--I love the loved the guitar tone, and the drumming was legit--though I didn't love the balladry. Sure enough, the balance on Sundowning feels really tipped toward the balladry. As soon as I got a minute into "Levitate," I said, "What the fuck?! This sounds like Hillsong United!" And not good Hillsong United because I think Zion and Empires were legitimately good albums. It's the bad kind, where someone just wank-sings over boring keys to no good end. Unfortunately, most of the songs follow the formula of making you sit through three minutes of ballad before you get to a heavy part, if there's a heavy part. The reviewer makes a great point that in a church setting, even though the songs might not be great, you're getting that congregational boost that makes them more powerful. When you're sitting in your car listening to this Sleep Token lad warble on about whatever he's singing about in that same churchy style, it just doesn't have the same power.

I thought "Gods" sounded like a 2019 "When Girls Telephone Boys" (like someone noted above), but I like how they pulled it off to the point that I wish this album was mostly that sort of thing. When they get heavy, the drummer is doing my favorite kind of stuff. Abe Cunningham would be proud! Maybe touring and some experience will make for a much better LP 2. I also agree with the above comment about the disjointedness. No flow whatsoever.

Zion and Empires indeed own! I'm also likely the only person who'll staunchly defend Aftermath through the valley of the shadow of death!!! And yea, the singer here could definitely tone down the platform opportunity pandering a little, he gets in the way of his own melodies much too frequently.

Drumming indeed rules, some impeccable grooves on this joint, all things considered.

This is awful. I enjoyed their heavier singles like Calcutta but this sounds like they recorded every instrument directly into their DAW and polished the life out of the vocals. They are mixed WAY too high and it just sounds like a crappy Christian ballad album. Wtf happened?

Ah, I forgot about Aftermath! I do dig that one for the most part, though I think the first half is a lot stronger than the second. After "Bones" it gets a little draggy-ballad heavy.
