Return to shoegaze [2]
Everything and Nothing is the best.
Thank you for reading this, now leave me alone

I love Hammock for their slow paced, relaxing songs (Ten Thousand Years Won't Save Your Life and Glassy Blue are my two favs) but found Mysterium to be a little too brooding and depressing. I'm guessing this is more of the same (as was the previous album, since I didn't know about that one), if not a little better?

Departure Songs is one of the very few double albums I can listen to in one setting without getting bored.

departure songs used to be my fav but i think everything & nothing has taken the lead for me, i've spent so many overnight buses across europe listening to that album while attempting and failing to get some sleep, lol

Agree this is the best of this mini series. It somehow comes out feeling a lot less cheesy

One of their best albums

Went through a few songs yesterday, sounds like some really good Hammock. Need to finish it though. Between this and new AWVFTS, it's gonna be a somber winter.

The strings on this are amazing

One of their songs' strings immediately gave me inspiration to add a cello and violin duet sort of thing to a song I have in the works. I had to hurry my dog to pee so I could get back inside before I forgot my idea.

How do you hurry a dog to pee pls?
|
| |
Well, it’s the afterpee. Don’t let her stop to sniff and mess about on the way back in. Then I run inside and write “cello A-E-D-E violin F#-C#-B-C#, start violin on cello D”, then change the midi notes after I realize I don’t like it.

I don't know if one ever "moves on" from grief like that, but certainly music of this nature helps in a similar way therapy does: as an outlet for naming our grief, processing it, and being seen in it. Not all of us are cut out to write music, but at least we have artists like them who can fill that space to a degree. This trilogy has been an amazing treatment of grief and loss. They didn't just devote a piece or two to the subject, packaged it up, and moved on; they have sat with it for several years now, and let the listeners in on the process. They are well able to translate emotional space into often-lyricless music, and while they can go "dark", this series has never felt that way. It has felt sacred, as real emotion, both highs and lows, is.

I’m doing a weird backwards binge of this band but damn if they’re not my favs. They truly can’t do any wrong even if they go drone.

Finding "Breathturn" years ago was one of those moments where I knew exactly the kind of music I wanted to find, but didn't' know where to look or how exactly to describe it. And then I came across that song somehow and it nailed it.
