The atmospheres on some of this stuff are pretty mesmerising... e.g. Annaline, Amnesia, Leaving Meaning, It's Coming It's Real

Despite expecting a disappointing album based on the review and comments I actually found this very meditative and calming, and quite a rewarding listen albeit in a very subtle and understated way. Its slow swell, its tribal rhythms and ritualistic vocal delivery all converge to bury their way into your subconscious. Maybe lacking in some excitement and variation, but it is also a refreshing change from the pattern established with the previous three albums, with no 20+ minute epics to endure. I think this will likely only get better for me.

Listened to this again today and I suppose it’s a fine line between meditation and sleep, between soothing and boring. But I’m definitely in the former camp for this one. The music just drifts though your mind. My kind of medicine.

Yo Watchman I actually appreciate that comment. I've been hesitant to listen to this since it came out but now I've got a new motivation to.

No worries. I’m a complete Swans newbie. Having never heard any of their albums I started with their first album last Monday and been listening to them literally non stop. It’s my aim to have an initial rating for every album. Then will need to go back for some deeper listening; got a feeling a couple of ratings will change the more familiar I become with their work. I’m enjoying the ride so far!

giving this a 4 makes me think you're somehow gonna 3 the seer and to be kind

I just 3.5’d Glowing Man. Some great songs, but the first 2 songs really felt like a misfire for the opening of the album and x3 20 min+ songs was a big ask. I’m now almost halfway through To Be Kind and I’m enjoying it, it’s a more abrasive energetic listen than either of the last two.

@hamid95 ha ha you were spot on. I just gave To Be Kind a 3. I’ve left a comment on that album thread about my initial thoughts.

Man I love The Seer and To Be Kind, both are easy 5 for me, but I still think this album is great. After Glowing Man, which felt a little stale and too much reminiscent of the two mentioned masterpieces in its best moments, leaving meaning is a welcomed step into new direction, slightly boring in some moments but pretty and hypnotic in others. The Necks' contribution is just gorgeous and I'm really curious how are these songs gonna sound live.
It feels too safe to get even close to Soundtracks, but nothing will ever top Soundtracks, so I'm fine with what I got here.

I think To Be Kind will likely grow on me, it was a lot more complex than the final two and all these ratings I’m giving the Swans is after just a couple of listens. I’m just finding my feet with them really. I know that I need a lot more time with Children of God and Soundtracks. And this one set against the rest of their discography maybe you’re right that this feels too safe, but still a good album.

Title track's the best track here. Such an amazing hypnotic song.
Hope to see them live next year.

This guy has more "final albums" than Martin Scorsese has mafia movies.

Yeah, and they specifically said Swans wasn't done after Glowing Man anyway, just that particular line-up

My Phantom Limb, What Is This and The Nub are so good. Band is a goth's paradise

Why is this so bad in comparison to the rest of their post-reunion stuff -_-

I am excited about the new album (which I guess is now a 2023 situation) but I really appreciate the direction they took on this one compared to the previous two releases. I dig the longform of the previous two albums but this one is a breath of fresh air for most it.

I’m also curious to hear the new one, sounds like it’ll be another new direction. This is my least favorite since the mid ‘80s era. The t/t, The Nub, It’s Coming It’s Real, and What is This? are best.
