I've only heard this album once, but so far I agree with the review. My favorites are Grand Declaration followed by Chimera. The rest of their albums don't really keep my attention (Including their debut). This one seems better than those, at least.

I've been hungry for well-made BM of this "classic" attitude forever, so I welcome this hard. Maybe overrating but I don't care.

I'm not a "black metal buff" per-se, and I really enjoyed this.

"As such, bands have gone on to refine and evolve the genre in some way, leaving Mayhem in the rear-view mirror."

That sounds a bit harsh to me, a lot of their Blasphemer-era releases were rather innovative for their time. It's hard to find similar albums to Grand Declaration or Ordo ad Chao, they really nailed a new eerie aesthetic there. Their Teloch-era albums, including this one here, seem less groundbreaking but are still very enjoyable overall.

"being strong-armed by a lot of glaring similarities to that of Behemoth. The overall vibe of the record frequently reminded me of things Behemoth have been doing for a while now – be it the Gregorian chants, squalling guitar parts, compositional structures, or even vocal approaches – there’s a constant reminder that Mayhem had their eyes fixed on what Nergal and co. have been doing"

I really don't hear this at all tbh. Like what?

However, there’s no such thing as reviewing an album “objectively”, music is entirely subjective. Also, I didn’t say I wasn’t a fan of bm, I said I don’t hold mayhem in as high regard as most

That paragraph about Behemoth doesn't make sense

Mayhem brought all these sounds to the genre. They've been using Gregorian chants since 1994 lol

i know they did, but i feel -- here at least -- they've reached a point where they're looking at other bands who have taken these tropes and made something better out of them.

i honestly don't understand how people cant hear behemoth in this lol it was so distracting
