Sorry for the delay. You're absolutely right that all of those suggestions don't apply to this review. On a 2.5 review you're not likely to fashion a convincing argument for or against; so I think that was broader advice and I'm not even saying you don't already do it. Jac was right when he said to avoid superfluous adjectives, but what I was suggesting was analogy and imagery - something that helps the reader visualize the sounds if that makes sense. This can be done without even consulting a thesaurus which I think alleviates concerns about superfluousness.

Again, these are merely things I like when I read. It's by no means the right way and every review will have a different flavor. Some will be more formal/standard and others may afford a little more imagination. So I didn't mean to ruffle feathers and hopefully did not; was just hoping to offer mild motivation/outside perspective to broadening approaches to writing. :-) It's certainly advice I need to take myself, too!

These are great points to make, basically for all levels of reviewing. My features aren't ruffled at all (one could say I could strut like a peacock at this stage). I was actually looking forward to discussing this topic further, whether it's for my benefit, yours or another budding reviewer who may be looking for some insight from a potential reader.

I suck at giving feedback like I used to, but for some reason inspiration struck right now.

Gone are the days of you, Crysis and Dev tearing my reviews apart sentence by sentence so I guess I should take the personal growth of eight-ish years of sput and run haha.

*looks back fondly.

I miss those days too. The art of feedback has fallen by the wayside in favor of quick and convenient responses, and almost never criticism. Especially once someone has written as many reviews as you or I, it's easy to forget that honing one's craft is an endless process and we should never stop looking for ways to creatively expand & improve mechanically. It also doesn't hurt that with promotions coming in February, I like to try to give a quick boost to some of my favorite writers in hopes that they'll impress in the months leading up.

Don't agree with the rating, but I like your review a lot and appreciate where you're coming from.

I've been a huge fan of this band since their debut (which is still my favorite of their releases). Thought their last effort was a bit of a step backwards, but I still seemed to like it a lot more than most of the population. Seems to be the same deal here; this jams hard. Loving the riffs, the progressive injections they place all throughout their songs, songwriting is on point.

I can see why it's not everyone's thing, on my first few listens it dragged a touch. Especially since all of the songs are a tad long.

Hierophant absolutely shreds though.

First listen was great. Great Ghost Brigade fix, actually. Nocte, you dig that band?

It's not striking a chord, have you a friendly link for reminding purposes (a quick go to perhaps?)

Think thats one of their more well known songs. Anyway, they're like a heavier katatonia and their style minded me of in mourning's direction here.

Oh that, saw xeno doing it so i jumped in too.

Got back on this album and it's a monster. It's got everything, brutality and beauty. Second half is even better than the first.

I just realized their last 3 album covers are almost impossible to decipher from far away

I'm not sure why but after reading they were going for a melodeath sound with some doom and post elements sprinkled in, this album clicked with me when it had not on first listen. Don't go in expecting a pure melodeath production ala Insomnium. This seems to perfect what they were trying, moving from Weight of Oceans to Afterglow, when Afterglow was pretty underwhelming.

most of their previous material sounded like 3rd rate blackwater park with a bit more melody, is this really any different?

I really do think this hits better than the rest of their stuff.
