Just finished reading the review. Wonderful work as always Sowing.
"The biggest surprise of all comes in the final moments of the six minute closer ‘Congratulations’, where Jimmy Eat World basically transforms into a thrash metal band over the course of an epic, gritty, minute-long breakdown."
Oh boy I don't know if I'm ready for this!

very keen for this, sounds like a better (less awfully produced) Damage from some of your descriptions. I had to skip the lyric passages because Adkins' songwriting is that important to me, I want to go in blind

I struggled with the idea of including lyrics for that exact reason but ultimately decided I couldn't convey my appreciation without it

Dang fans of their more moody and atmospheric stuff may be turned off isn’t what I wanna hear :/

It shouldn't be a surprise though. They've always altered between lighter stuff and moody stuff ever since Static Prevails.

The usually have a mix though I guess. Where you have Nothingwrong, you have Night Drive straight after. Where you have The Authority Song you have My Sundown straight after. Looks like this will have more tracks like the former, but I'm sure they'll still be great. And 555 already sounds to be a moody track with some of the darkest lyrics Jim has ever written.

Right. I'm firmly in the moody/atmospheric "team Futures/IB" and typically enjoy their slower and more thoughtful tracks more than anything. I'm not going to lie, this was a disappointment at first. It all feels very dry and formulaic. But once you get past that, the songs are all great and the lyrics are more subtle than on IB but still very good. For me it's on par with Invented and Chase This Light, although it's not as pretty as the former nor as catchy as the latter - it's sort of a middle ground there. Anyway, it's currently hovering around my 4th-5th favorite album of theirs.

And that's funny minty because 555 struck me as one of the poppiest tracks here

It totally sounds poppy in its production and chorus hook. But the lyrics tell a very dark story (I have a live recording of the whole song). I wont say what they're about here. But for me I don't know if Jim has ever portrayed something so depressing and sad before. I wasn't into the song AT ALL until I started paying attention to the lyrics and now the song moves me. But I can still see the song not working for some people and maybe even me when I hear the album version.

I feel like maybe this album wont be a 5/5 classic on its own, but maybe will serve as a companion album to IB, making it a one-two punch showcasing the best of the band's different styles. Imagine how perceptions might have been had they waited 6 years and released IB and Surviving as a 5/5 double album. I don't know why I feel like the two albums "belong" together because their albums are always 3 years apart. Maybe because these last 3 years have gone by so quickly and I don't feel like I've grown or changed that much in the interim.

Great review.
Was expecting something that built on what they did in Integrity Blues, guess I'll tone my expectations down a bit.

Ive been wanting them to rock out again for quite a while. It's overdue. I think I'll be happy because we still have so many great moody tracks to enjoy from their back catalogue.

Will never not be mega excited for a Jimmy Eat World album, and Love Never and All The Way are the best lead singles they've release in quite a while, so dial that hype up to 11 baby

(Good review too, can't wait to hear Congratulations and Delivery)
