"And when your life falls apart around you, when you 'can’t stop drinking,' like Barnett,"
Who knows if thats really a problem for him though, he has said that not all his lyrics are real life, he embellishes and writes fictional stories. Hes singing from the same perspective as the character from Anna on that one. But it could be partially rooted in reality.

yeah he definitely takes a lot of story-telling liberties in his lyrics

I didn't like the singles as much as I wanted to. I'll have to listen to this all the way through since I loved After the Party. I'm guessing that will remain my fave from them.

Good review as per usual, but out of curiosity, why'd you put revisionist history in quotes?

This isn't my favorite Menzingers record, but I think this is by far their sharpest lyrically

Since I'm not going to rewrite the review I wrote that I didn't back up and got eaten by the Sput servers might as well get my thoughts out here.
Did not care for this at all. Thought the songs were very tepid, mid-tempo, and lifeless, no hooks or choruses that grabbed me at all, could barely make out any lyrics details except for excerpts of the same old nostalgia "things were better then" and "cheap beer/cigarettes/etc." stuff. The only song that stood out from a subject matter perspective is the first one, which is just another in a long line of extremely lame attempts at a Trump-era rock anthem (have to admit, I think the first half of this review is giving them way too much credit.
I thought After the Party was overrated (the instrumental performances on that record are just so blah) but at least it had some real catchy songs and a worthwhile emotional core to it. This one just feels like 46 minutes of wheelspinning.
(Also my summary was "On the Interminable Past' which I was kinda proud of)

"things were better then" and "cheap beer/cigarettes/etc."
this annoyed me as well. "back when, back to the times, remember when?" ugh. they already covered all of that in much better ways. now it feels forced, like theyre trying to match what their fans are expecting.

I'd say he is pretty explicitly referencing Fukuyama in the opener. He isn't exactly obscure.
