This is disappointing

It's not aoty or anything but it's still a really fun listen

I think this album was written with the anime project in mind, or possibly both were being completed at the same time. So that definitely changes the vibe of the album and answers some of the "why" questions about the sound of the album. It's strange that the review nor any of the comments take this into consideration.

@greencorn5 the album is standalone, the anime is just a supplement to the material, like an extended music video. The music is the music.

I'd love to see someone analyze the album in the context of the anime tbh, so many great images and sequences to dig into

wtf is that album cover lmao, worries me for what might've happened to Sturgill

Nope. Went into this with zero expectations.

First couple of listens to this were mixed but it’s starting to grow on me quite a bit. Definitely won’t top MMSICM or ASGTE but Sturgill can do no wrong.

Just watched the anime and it goes from good to crap at exactly the same points as the album, which is weirdly appropriate.

there's an... anime?

Kinda. It's like a long-form anime music video for the album on Netflix, but the narrative is a bit wibbly-wobbly.

so uh this is kinda cool but am I the only one that thinks the production is terrible?

Electric guitar led rock hasn’t sounded this good in years. Sturgill stays in a league of his own.

some of the songs sorta start to blend together after a while
as I alluded to in my review I don't suspect that this will have the longevity of sailor's guide
still great, but more of a short-term fun listen

Cyg, yeah the dynamic range is pretty fucked but I think it’s kind of an aesthetic decision here, not that that means it works.

not very good, unfortunately

Only part of the anime I didn't care for was the dancing bit, otherwise it was great.

Seemed like the damn thing ran out of story. It got me invested in the story and then the dancing happened then the non-sequitur skateboarder bit then the cat getting firebombed... It really only didn't get good again until the end battle.
Which is kind of how I feel about the album in general. It starts off having a haunted country blues atmosphere, like a retrowave version of Casualties of Cool, and then it gets derailed completely by that awful awful awful disco song and it never really finds its stride again until the last song.
