I’m looking forward to the inevitable backlash (or not) when ‘high average curiosity’ strikes, although you never know. Maybe this will be immune to such shenanigans.

I loved their album with Julie Christmas and am only just now realizing I haven’t ever actually listened to this band. Think I’ll fix that today

"There is still a difference between atmospheric sludge and post metal i feel, although the differences are so negligible that you might aswell use them interchangeably."

not that negligible when you can sift through those influenced by Neurosis and those influenced by Mogwai noodling

"One album did not make me view the genre as a whole differently I guess. I've deliberately not wrote it as a fact though, it's the image and association I have with the genre, which doesn't make it true persé."

yea for me I'm coming from the time when Panopticon and Salvation were released so for me it never came off that masculine, unless I was just getting into the band as most of you did by 2016. this band always had a feminine aura to them, especially since that was their aim with the band name. I'd try to remember more post-metal bands with female players in em like frickkin Battle of Mice for one, but I'm still planning on making a big list with teamster before I try to dig through my collections. I've seen how guys were like "oh wow a female in the mix, that changes things" in different scenes and it usually rubs me the wrong way, prob why I felt I had to point it out. right now people are comparing my cousin to agnes obel and I'm laughing/dying about it, those guys don't have much of a parallel to work off of I guess.

Being totally honest here, I feel there is a main genre conflict that these type of bands are getting rid of...To have this spacey post attitude is sometimes counter-producing with the sludge/ muddy vibe... So I praise how these bands evolved to a more shiny mod, much more coherent with what they are trying to achieve. Mind that I stumble upon this conflict more on The Ocean's early releases, than CoL per se.

The contrast is welcome, I bloody love lighter moments/passages interspersed with crushing heaviness. If the mood is always one of darkness and the riffs are pummelling and relentless in their intensity, where’s the payoff? If I want that itch scratching, then show me some DM or something.

the payoff is in the dynamics and buildups, I rather take that than guitars noodling up the boards with loops and delays over and over

Did you even read what I wrote? I wasn’t criticising, it was in response to DDD.

I love the crushing heaviness elements, but for me that's not sludge, for me sludge is dusty production, loose/reverb distortion. IDK...the sludge concepts may be a little shifting here...

And I'm just trying to say I enjoy how these bands are evolving to the point they are now.

yes I obviously read what you wrote or else I'd wouldn't had responded back lol what an awkward question you put

CoL pretty much perfected what Neurosis did back in 2004 with their own twists here. Going off what I responded to flug up there (if YOU even read that, and what ddd pretty much added onto without reading either) on the differences of what constitutes and post-metal and "atmospheric sludge", I'm saying I rather take what's presented here than what bands after 2008 were noodling about while adding 'heavy' half-hearted sections.

sludge definitely evolved and broadened, if that hadn't been apparent on the bands added to Roadburn as an example each year. we're 13 years far removed from the height of sludge.

For me sludge and postmetal in a proggy way are difficult to balance. These bands (The Ocean or Col) are definitely succeeding, but abandoning a bit their sludgy side. Unlike a band like Inter Arma f.e., that keeps its sludgy&filthy side well and alive. Mind that this is no negative critique to none of the bands involved.

off-course yes the AVG is fucked up indeed...this dude said this:

"This is simply an album you cannot rate after 1 listen"

so now you won't be able to see me 4.5ing it and then 5ing it....it will be a straight 5 dash.
