Just lazy art tbh. Looks like they’re going for mass appeal with that cover. Can only hope that the music is a different story.

I do prefer the more tech-y covers. I give the new art a 2/5

The colour is so refreshing after all this black and white

"you might like the new one"
Lol

not a huge fan of the new album, their music is just so weird now, maybe I'm not "smart" enough to get it. Exai was a great return to form but SIGN is just more super abstract stuff. Wish they'd go back to the Amber/Tri sound, though Chiastic is my personal favorite

New one doesn't sound "super abstract" at all to me, especially not compared to Exai or pretty much anything they've made since Oversteps. It's probably their most conventionally melodic and homogenous full-length album since the turn of the century.

Bet they suck at melodicism just as hard as they suck at arranging machine queefs tbf
|

But now that u guys have me all curious maybe I’ll lsten after all

Well Pots to address the comment about you maybe liking the new one, I doubt it, but you probably won't hate it either lol

Ok I’ll set my expectations halfway between liking it and not hating it

The Designer's Republic album covers are always boring. they did a nice job on Exai though

I would say SIGN is their most ambient and emotive work since the Garbage EP (except for maybe NTS 4), but I would hesitate to describe it as melodic. Even buried underneath their most rhythmically dense material from stuff like Untilted and NTS I find satisfying melodies that get stuck in my head. Compared to the more ambient side of their newer era (Oversteps/Move of Ten), the melodies on SIGN are a lot more subdued.

pogged out of my mind

Probably agree it's more emotive than anything they've done in ages, as the melodies are usually paired with (or played via) these really bright synths with lots of delay and sustain. I get the "subdued" description for that reason, but I found melodies themselves to be much more resolute than expected. It's growing on me either way.

NTS Seasions 1 and 4 are musical monoliths. Gonk Steady One puts most music to shame. One of the most titanic achievements of electronic music.
