I find it interesting how the general opinion changed fast in the buildup to this album. There were some skeptical about St. Vincent's involvement on this, but most were hyped. "Hurry On Home" dropped and the reception was mostly positive. Sometime later "The Future Is Here" dropped and reception was mixed. Then came that terrible performance on Jimmy Fallon of "Hurry on Home". Shortly after the news about Janet Weiss leaving the band. At this point onwards, every new track was met with some hostility. On other social media, I've seen people delete previous commentaries (favorable ones) to write negative ones. S-K fans ought to like some change but when it cost them one of their members it became too much for most, I guess. Like a kid who can't forgive his mother after a breakup.

Heard the record just now, not impressed but also not strongly against it. I'll spin it a few more times before coming to a conclusion.

Yeah this is a solid 3.5 from me

Ruins -> Bad Dance is not very great, but everything else is enjoyable

@hadeserbonfa Let it be known, that I was skeptical from the minute the news of a new album came out.

Anytime a band moves labels (especially to a shit label like Mom+Pop) and starts releasing singles out the wazoo, you can just tell something's gone wrong behind the scenes. Even before Janet left, I kind of knew it was over (but stayed optimistic).

true, @SandwichBubble, I do remember some users in here, you most of all, skeptical from the get-go. I'm quite fond of S-K and was hyped for the album so I kinda avoided S-K threads in here haha

I don't follow the news of pretty much any bands so I didn't even know of the controversy, the departure, or bother listening to singles before I had the chance to hear the whole album. It just sucks on its own merits, context aside.

Didn't know about the build up to this album at all. It's just really lame. The critic from the NY times hit the nail on the head saying the band sounds like it's going through a pop apprenticeship.

Watching one of my old favorite bands slowly decay in real time was quite the experience, I'd say you guys missed out. 10/10 would cry again.

Sorry man, feel for you, at least they still have a stellar back catalogue, so they had an amazing run... I kinda have low expectations for a band after 5 albums anyway.

Its the sad reality of life, pretty much every band will eventually descend into mediocrity or pure garbage

This was just OK, nothing great but not warranting the 1's and 2's IMO

The words "just OK" should never describe one of the best bands of the 90s. It's blasphemous at best. Thus, it's a 1.0.

Gonna make another bet here and now: they're gonna double down on this sound for the next album (if there even will be a next album).

Hope I'm wrong, but a misstep this large is hard to come back from.

If they double down and produce a great pop album, I'll be ok with that. This is derivative and bad derivative at that.

I'm not sure they have it in them, but I'd argue that they had plenty of pop in their sound before this. This one is just pushes it to its (illogical) extreme.

Pop Sleater-Kinney isn't bad, overproduced Sleater-Kinney is.

True, my bad, they have had pop elements before - not really getting my point across that well.

I get what you mean, like a more "conventional" pop sound? I don't know if they could pull off a total pop makeover. Cause if this is them trying to do that, they failed pretty hard right out of the gate.

Wow, my first "newbie makes an account just to talk shit". The mark of a great reviewer. I'm honored, truly.
