Great review. Agree that it drags on too long, but My Pain and "Not Long For This World are the ones that wear out the welcome for me, not Orphans or Solway.
I feel like I'm in the minority in liking the experimentation on Spiders, it's good break from the relentless pace and is texturally interesting. My Pain is a straight slog and far and away the worst track on the album.
Wish they replaced My Pain/Not Long with All Out Life, that track fucks.

Oh yeah they've always had a ton of fat on their records and they dick around a lot with stupid and/or boring stuff but I was always hoping they'd mature out of it.

I am not sure how I feel about this at all. It’s definitely the most invigorated they’ve sounded in a long while but idk if I love it.

"people are very emotional and will be inevitably disappointed by Tool while they were inevitably surprised by this, so I would not be surprised at all if that happens" Loved it Shadow. But could reasonably 4 them both for the same reason! Pretty much all music is made for people x)

I haven’t listened to this, but I’ll never get the love for Vol 3. It’s a scattered mess and Corey sounds like shit on it. The S/T was their best despite being immature. Corey has sounded like crap when screaming since the band left Ross Robinson, who used a lot of preamp distortion and double tracking to make them sound more powerful.

I’m not getting the whole praise behind “Spiders”. It sounds like Brenden Urie tries to cover Nine Inch Nails. Just awkward.

I was underwhelmed with All Hope is Gone with it's more poppier overtones, and their last record seemed very much half baked to me. This seems to be a well thought out record with much more tone and atmosphere and actually utilizes electronics and syntheziers that have been missing and the anger on here feels much more organic than the past two records.m/Last record felt like they were going through the motions, this seems to have new flame of intensity.

The experimentation on Volume 3 really worked for me. The songwriting was a lot more mature, the variation between each song, etc. Corey's harsh vocals aren't great on it, easily the worst he's ever been, but songwriting wise it might be their most mature (tied with this).
And c'mon, All Hope Is Gone is clearly their worst, guys. That album has some good tracks, but it also might have the worst flow an album has ever had.

i tried vol 3 again and it's basically unlistenable for me with that death magnetic tier mastering
pretty much automatically puts it below everything else but the songs might be their most shallow work too

Damn...vol 3 is one of my favorites ahah, totally disagree on the shallowness of the songs. Heretic Anthem is great, but songs like that are so cringe lyrically - half the lyrics on Iowa don't even make sense lol
