"Also the Little Simz being 4th highest rated on RYM is bizarre - not a bad album but what?"
wait, 4th highest rap or 4th highest overall? I liked that album quite a bit but either ranking seems a little high

top 10 albums on rateyourmusic with fantano ratings
1. tyler the creator - 9
2. weyes blood - 9
3. this album - 8
4. little simz - 9
5. lingua ignota - no rating, only has 64 ratings on RYM as well
6. black midi - 8
7. jai paul - 6
8. the caretaker - no rating
9. the comet is coming - 8
10. billy woods - 8
and the list goes from there...
also worth noting that jai paul was the runaway #1 until fantano reviewed it, after which it precipitously dropped

Palmolive, Giannis, and Education are instant classics.

Education is the best song here by a massively lopsided margin I will admit (tho the echo effect on the hook is painfully cheesy)

why cheesy

I dunno I just think it makes it sound overly self-serious when the verses do a fine enough job with substance as is

I can’t believe in 2019 Fantano is still as influential as he was four years ago - for what it’s worth I actually like his reviews and respect his taste as being identifiable and he justifies his preferences pretty well - but why is his taste elevated so much higher than any other Internet taste maker?
Is he the pied piper continuously attracting in bright eyed fresh acolytes or does he have the same legion of Fantano stans he picked up in the early years? Some strange shit

I looved thatistheplan and enjoy Fantano as an entertainer, but I usually hate fantanocore. his taste is bland and too pitchfork-esque. he likes a lot of god awful new shite they're passing off as 'rap' these days, not talking about this album though

fantano's rap taste is pretty shite, but his taste for heavier music is usually spot on.

sometimes, he just doesn't focus on that but it's cool that he likes black metal

I should revisit this but on first impressions it was so overwhelmingly disappointing compared to Pinata that I dont want to

"Basically the content here is all cocaine and occasionally money, money which naturally came from selling cocaine, which is cool because it also gets bitches."
this is a bad faith take imo. even when he's rapping about these things he tends to introduce some moral complexity that's more than your average MC. And "Practice", "Education", "Situations"? all deeper content than that

Dude's got decent taste, for what it's worth. I too am baffled at how influential he is, tho, but we all know RYM is trash, so wgaf.

Listened to this once, didn't really feel it... lately been listening to Benny the Butcher's plugs I met EP which I find myself enjoying more, specially lyrically

I suppose I didn't detect much moral complexity here, sounded and read to me as if the cocaine was all there was and it wasn't too bad. Any reversal that was portrayed was just as quickly reversed upon itself, treading the same ground continuously.
re: Fantano stuff; are there no other big-name YouTube music critics? I'm thoroughly out of the loop for that, never watched him before.

i mean you do realize this is gangsta rap, right? Freddie is a cocaine rapper, that's just what he is. but i agree with Rowbro, for every THuggin there's a Deeper or a Practice and there's is plenty of content here that has little to do with drugs and bitches. he's no Thought, but Freddie's lyrics aren't trash.
album grows hard and is ridiculously consistent.

This is weird to me too on there, like it's a really enjoyable album, but top 5?
And yeah the beats on this are great, but lyrics and rapping I don't care for.

That Simz album is good, but it'll be forgotten in a few years

'That Simz album is good, but it'll be forgotten in a few years'
bullseye
I guess the latest Tyler the Creator will possibly share that fate depending what he releases over the next decade - that album is almost a masterclass in disposable easy breezy instrumentals afforded a 'heartbreaking theme' that is currently connecting...but in 5 years? You might just listen and hear the fluffy instrumentals minus the concept if skimming past
If he releases two more highly regarded albums next could be a sad n' slight stepping stone....which just happened to top the RYM chart of 2019 for some reason. History will tell....
