Magnolia + Under the Wheel is an amazing combo.
Also yahhp, the Choir transition is remarkably smooth, very well done.

Magnolia is an easy standout for sure, incredible song. Loved Last Word and Beneath the Rose as singles as well, enjoyed Shine pretty well and still do. Anodyne and Under the Wheel are also fantastic. Bloom is a nice capoff. Album is great, sitting at a strong 4 for me probably, definitely some of my favorite from them and it's crunchy and fuzzy and ugly but in a much more clear and bass punchy and listenable way than this thread's album, if G&G got this treatment honestly I feel like it'd immediately be a much better album. Although I think this band always overextends themselves a bit on the doubles and their single album releases are always more consistent, Stone and Purple stand out as favorites for me honestly.

Blue > Red > Purple > Stone > Gold and Grey >>>>>>>>>>> Yellow and Green
New one slaps btw

Blue/Red def favs behind Purp/Stone but I'm not kvlt enough to like them as much all the way through. My favorite songs on them are easily as good or better than anything on Purp/Stone tho.

G&G > Blue > Y&G > Purple > Stone > Red all winners
I still view this record as a wounded masterpiece.

Purple is a really nice album packed with great songs and catchy if derivative riffs, not really sure what there would be to apologize for. Chlorine & Wine is one of the best songs of its nature I've heard in a v v long time and definitely a discography highlight.

Kerosene is up there with their best too, that outro is bliss
Production bad yeah yeah

honestly I can tolerate this band's goofy production on all of their albums, it's the awkward as hell vocals on 90% of their songs that bring down my ratings for them

Greatly enjoyed the response from the band re: this album's production being that it was legitimately what they wanted it to sound like

i wonder how that went down
"Hey guys, I really REALLY want to make our next work as unpalatable to the human ear as physically possible with the instruments at our disposal. No particular reason, just think it'd be cool to inflict pain on anyone who likes our music."
"K"
and then they did

having only heard this back when it came out and Purple in more recent memory the new record kicked the shit out of my expectations. that sequence of "Beneath the Rose" into the haunting spoken word of "Choir" and then "The Dirge" which seamlessly ends side A of the record is just wonderful.

I really dig this band but I hate the compressed production, it hurts my ears almost, every time I listen to them I think, if only this could be remastered with a higher DR.
