what a masterful review Row. Definitely gonna spin this, even though I'm a latecomer to the Dangerous Summer party

This is so good. I'm only slightly disappointed by the closer, which isn't as good as their others (waves and never feel alone especially).

Excellent review - this album is stunning. There are highlights dotted throughout but I have to agree re. Start Over / Slowing Down, it's the focal point of the entire album.

It all flows so well too; what an unexpected surprise from these guys, especially after the s/t last year

why on earth is Consequence of Living the closer and not the title track

It’s such a nice surprise seeing so many people dig this band in 2019

The opening prologue and blind ambition combo is so damn uplifting I can’t get over it

I was a tad disappointed in the closer situation too, first time I listened. it's definitely still one of my least favourites here (and uh, not sure how I feel about that pills lyric in the first verse, tbqh) but there's two good reasons I've come to for its placement where it is. #1, the Reach for the Sun throwback vibe is imo very deliberate and is essential to the way this album circles back to the start after taking the listener to the furthest point, aka Better Light; number two, much as title track would be a fucking fantastic closer, I can't imagine its ending without Better Light flowing on from it; the contrast of the hymn-like awestruck lyrics becoming the simple, heartfelt love song is the album's best moment imo

my first impression of this is quite good

I have a strangely personal connection to their last album (which everyone else seemed to dislike), and I'm not sure if the lyrics here top the ones on that record

gonna keep spinning but this is an easy 3.5+ probably like a 4.5 once it inevitably sinks in, lol

Their last album was the only album I heard from these guys before this. Had no idea they were this talented

Also blind ambition’s main riff gives me life

It makes me very happy that people who are new to the band are also enjoying this. I was worried that some enjoyment was just coming from the progression this one shows compared to their past discography, but that’s clearly not been the case!

i've heard this like 5 times now and it's started to get really obvious how every song has pretty much the same four chord combo and it's really stepping this down for me

to be totally honest, you're almost certainly right but the last time I can remember caring about the guitars in this band was... well, War Paint, and even then it was a pretty backseat thing for me. I think they've progressively de-emphasised it since then to the point where the vocals, synth and drums are entirely doing the heavy lifting on this particular album - to my particular taste that's more than fine because guitar-driven pop-punk is a dime a dozen. the only guitar parts on this album I can consciously remember even taking note of are that cool little lick in Where Were You and the explosion in Mother Nature

I more mean harmonically than the guitar lines per-se. I I still think this is a really good album and it makes me feel a lot of things, it's just a bit underwhelming when you've already resolved the current chord to the next one in your head before it happens *every* time.

Yo, check out the guitars in the last 45 seconds of “Where I Want To Be”

More subtle, but they’ve had some strong guitar work since the beginning

This has always been a lyrics band to me, vocals to a smaller extent, and I've never cared about their instrumental abilities which I've always viewed as extremely average.

I want to review this so badly but for my REM streak... Should I do it anyway?

Well the first two albums had the same two guitar players, then one left (Bryan Czap) and was replaced by the guitarist from The Graduate (Matt Kennedy), then when they broke up the other guitarist never came back (Cody Payne, big yikes), so the only officially credited guitarist from the last two albums has been Matt. I know Matt is talented from his work with The Graduate, and there are times when it reflects in TDS albums, but it just seems like technicality has never driven these albums.
