neek you diggin' this?
I'm kind of hoping some people like this enough to debate with me. This definitely has some of their best ideas I just hate the production and at times the execution.
I'll stand by for a verdict!

I actually disagree with you there Sowing - the production is great. Very pristine and befitting of the sound they were going for. I just think they are struggling in the songwriting department here.

Songwriting is certainly the larger of the two issues, I'll grant you that. But the production just sounds so hollow and basic. I got used to the splendor and glimmering sheen that Lee brought to the table on the last two albums. IMO much more befitting for SSPU's style.

The production feels compartmentalized to me, but I don’t hate it. Nikki’s bass comes to the fore nicely a few times.
Sowing, I wish I could argue what I appreciate about this album but it feels so subjective. I have Carnavas and Swoon for crunchy riff SSPU, NoTW and Better Nature for atmospheric SSPU, and then this album for what I think is well-written and well performed pop rock. It’s soothing and invigorating without being very inventive. Idk, maybe I’m too boring now.

I feel like this is one of those albums that grows on the listener over time, which usually works out better than situations where it feels like an instant banger and the shine wears off quickly.

Hopefully this will grow for you too sowing. As I stated tho in the better nature thread I do feel like this album is missing a huge standout track, that akin to Panic Switch. I'd give this a 3.8, slightly above Pikul as it's incredibly consistent imo and I do dig the vibe of the album more than Better Nature.

I rather enjoyed this, pretty on par with their recent stuff and I liked the snappier songwriting.

Songwriting is so close to Swoon but with the electronic flair of NotW and BN. Closer is prob my favorite...

I'm hoping it does too, Con. Better Nature went from a 3.5 to a 4.5 for me, but that had plenty of standout tracks. I can't envision a route to a 4.5 for this album...maybe a 4 but more than likely I see it staying pretty close to where I have it now.

That's fair, as far as album rankings goes it's prob Carnavas > Swoon > Neck of the Woods > Widows Weeds > Pikul = Better Nature

This is definitely a 4 for me Sowing, I think a few songs in the middle are pretty weak but I'm loving the beginning three and end three (bar the closer)
Still trying to form a definitive opinion but it's one of their weaker albums for sure, but still a great album imo

The vocal melodies here are not very good even in my favorite tracks
Like wtf is that chorus to Freakazoid. Instrumentally I think this thing is fantastic tho

Still forming an opinion, but I think I like this overall more than Better Nature

Yeah instrumentally it's def more solid. Giving BN a proper relisten rn tho

Discounting their first two albums, BN has the best melodies, this has the best instrumentation, and Neck of the Woods is the best blend.

I think Swoon and Neck of the Woods are better than this, but can not decide where this sits among Better Nature and Carnavas (I know, how awful of me). Maybe those three are just tier 2 and Swoon and neck can just be my tier 1. Overall I dig this though! More than I did BN on first impression!

Weird comparison you made of Songbirds to Skin Graph ... I absolutely love both, but don't feel nearly as big of a build on Songbirds.

I don't feel nearly as big of builds either and Skin Graph is definitely the superior song. But the overall progression of each song I felt was very similar.

Oh man, I love Brian's vocals on this one. Am I bad at listening to music now?

No you aren't. Seems this is yet another divisive album from these guys.
