if you think this is 'community college music class' level then you know nothing about production

tyler, the creator does sort of project an uncanny relationship to lo-fi, self-taught composition and production techniques though. it's funny: even as he continually embellishes his production motifs, as he does on this record and flower boy, it sounds like the same dude hunched over his mac (??)

which is not to say that it's amateurish, but there's a -relationship- to amateurishness (?) that's consistent across his discography. not sure how to describe it well though

the 3rd most interesting rap release of the week for me. will jam injury reserve and slowthai first

What you call amateurish (and objectively it pretty much is) just seems to me like him kind of dicking around and having a good time. That was probably most apparent on Goblin. That whole album is a mess of silly ideas, but somehow it works. It's hard to take him too seriously, but I get the criticism all the same.

I seriously don't get the criticism

This is exploding with creativity and is ridiculously fun/ infectious

I wouldn't call it especially creative, but that's because I've heard a decent bit of stuff in this vein

I've heard stuff like this too but it always ended up being too artsy/hifalutin to actually stick a landing

This strikes just the right balance between that kind of thing and practicality

I don't get how people think this is better than Flower Boy. Granted, I think Flower Boy is a bit overrated but whatever. This is probably Tyler's best thus far.

I just heard Earthquake and it does kinda have that amateur FL Studio sound lol. Good song though.

New Injury Reserve is better but not by much imo. It definitely didn’t meet my expectations.
