I do enjoy it on the surface, although even for me it gets a little too fluffy at points.
I'm on my second official listen right now so we'll see if it gets better or worse.

Its a lot different than what I typically like, but this is just amazing pop rock in my mind

It's very enjoyable I'll give it that. I definitely prefer their previous album to this however.

None of their past work has ever really captured me, I really only know their biggest hits. maybe I'm enjoying this so much because I havn't spent much time with any of their past work so I had no expectations or opinions on them coming into this.

I get that. I do that all the time with bands lol. I'm glad you're enjoying this so much because that's definitely a little bit of a hyperbolic negative reaction to this going on. I can see disappointment, but this isn't terrible.

Halfway through my first listen. My first impression is that it is okay but it's missing something. Unbearably white is great though, among their best songs

I think it's mostly really good. Lyrics are thoughtful and sometimes inspired. Musically, it's varied and very imaginative. It's long, and less focused than say, Contra, but I like it as much or maybe more. Time will have the final say...

I do like the variety. Makes the length more acceptable

Unbearably White and This Life are great songs I will not deny, but they’re not enough to buoy the other 16 tracks of shit here.

On second full listen Unbearably White was the only song I still liked.

I’m about to make everyone hate me though: Contra is their best album and the only one worthy of a 5/5 so. It was like the debut but polishing up the cracks. It also didn’t have the filler of the two most recent. But to avoid comparisons of the two newest, Modern Vampires was actually awesome. This was just shit.

dunno about that, I like Contra about as much as Modern Vampires

Giant is still best Vampire Weekend song and how that never made proper Contra is beyond me.

I'm liking this a lot. Also, this is a very good review, fantastic work. I think I'm in a somewhat privileged position in that I only started listening to this band last year: I bought the first three CDs from an op-shop and hated what I heard on first instance, but quickly grew to love it; I never had to deal with the culture surrounding the band or its coverage, and the band struck me as tongue-in-cheek from the get-go (minus a couple first listens) -- I suppose I lose out on a lot of the context and nuance expressed in the review, but I really, really enjoy what I'm hearing, whether or not my impression is shallow.

Unless you use the 'fun' word and bump it to 3.5.
You can never account for people's ideas of fun ;D
