I'm gonna start using post-folk to describe some artist like him that have taken folk to the extent of the genre and combined it with heavy atmosphere, eclectic structures, and elements of rock and electronic (Bon Iver, Damien Rice, Ben Howard, Phoebe Bridgers, this album, etc.)

Oh, yeah, this sounds great. Love the steady build with those strings. I'm not sure how I feel about the vocals yet but a full listen should make them click.

I'm still gathering my thoughts on the new Tallest Man but I do like it just as much as his past work. It almost reminds me of The Big Freeze in a way. It doesn't push boundaries but I also don't feel like it's a direct retread, just stripping things back a little.

That's TMOE's fault then. He should have dropped his record in January when we can't be bothered with critical scrutiny. His peers are trying harder and it shows.

I actually listened to TMOE first, although I try not to let concurrent releases by artists I enjoy impact my perception of one another.

The Big Freeze comparison is on point, but I adored that Laura Stevenson record and it instantly hooked me in, whereas I feel TMOE does nothing overtly interesting with his latest (just kind of goes through the motions).

Anyway though, about this album, does anyone else hear a little Pink Floyd/Roger Waters in the shouted part of 'Don't Settle'? I'm hearing everything from Nick Cave and Pink Floyd to Brand New/Bright Eyes/Damien Rice on this album, and it's like heaven. The influences at play here are magnificent.

The Big Freeze is an astonishing peak in one of the best bodies of work of the decade so hard to live up to that

Other than that tho yeah I can see the similarities

nah The Big Freeze is great (of course), but it's not even the best Stevenson album (that goes to Wheel)

Wheel is her 3rd best album but contains the highest highs of any of em

I can't decide which half is better, the brooding, ominous first 5 tracks or the gorgeous, free-flowing back 7. What a great problem to have. It's gonna take some effort to restrain myself from prematurely 5'ing this. Can't believe what I'm hearing here, this is so close to being perfect.

"It Takes a Lot to Know a Man" is a 10/10 tune for sure, my fave here is def "Race to the Bottom," it's just so damn cool

I'm adoring this already and I'm only at Don't Settle.

The 1-2 punch of Race To The Bottom and The Closing Door is jawdropping, those two feel joined at the hip to me, so jazzy and darkly atmospheric

Last track too. God. Wanted to make sure I wasn't mistaken, this is one of the best albums of this decade
