She actually pisses me off so much it's almost irrational and I have to stop and remind myself that shes just a dumb kid figuring things out
But then another voice in my head screams "ABORT"

I forget where you said it Pots but one point you made in this thread that I wholeheartedly agree with is that the album lacks focus - I heard 'bury a friend' first and was expecting an album more uniformly thematic in a dark and twisted way. With that said, the other singles helped shape my expectations following that into something more diverse. But either way, I wish she would have opted for more songs like 'bury a friend' and less like '8'...there's no reason someone couldn't have reined her in and said "hey, this shit is gonna ruin the flow of the entire album" - but for some reason, no one ever did.

Really well written review. I like how you focus on the impact the album could have on pop in the grand scheme of things. I’m somewhere in the middle and liked Don’t Smile are me better I think.
I too have to remind myself constantly that she’s a kid lol

"I wish she would have opted for more songs like 'bury a friend' and less like '8'" [2]
This is actually quite an enjoyable pop record, and I love the songs like "bad guy", "you should see me in a crown" and "bury a friend," but there are just some songs that kind of ruin the flow of the album, like you said. Much more focus on the dark approach could've made this album a lot better to me, but still, it's good nonetheless

@sowing agreed! I have been on the fence about bury a friend since it came out... I kind of like it and am kind of irked by it, but it was unique and broody and it made me anticipate the full album with some eagerness, especially when it was marketed as such a centerpiece . When there wasnt much follow through I felt jipped

Also someone wrote a soundoff about this being an album of billie ASMR whispering and I lol'd. I've had similar thoughts regarding Bury A Friend and I think that's why it simeutaneously intrigues me so much and makes me want to stab my ear drums

Wonderful review, I love and wholly agree with your anti pop thesis, I think she's doing some unique things considering her popularity
'you should see me in a crown’ is one of three most muscular pop songs I've heard in a long time

Those two songs didn't rally bother me too much in the contract of the album the first time I heard them but I'll listen for it next time

Absolutely agree, I feel like that song tricked me into listening to a bunch of weak Lana del Rey b sides

LDR has a more distinctive voice tbh - harsh comparison on her

It could definitely have a better flow. I just straight up don't like "8" but the rest of this thing is mostly full of bangers. This is just so much more interesting and unique than her ep which was bland as.

Appreciate the compliments from many of you, I felt like it was important to provide cultural context because she owes much of her success to the fact that she's different; not a musical wunderkind.
