yeah this might be top 3 of 2019 so far. as someone who's never really listened to Devy and only listened to the Periphery debut, are the others worth checking?

Hear a lot of SikTh in this, singer is very good too. A lot to like, just none of it is really my cup of tea anymore

This doesn't do much for me, but it's all well played and they clearly have a lot of technical skill.

Not digging this much as their first. The production seems to muddle things a bit , in their first album everything seems to pop a little more and just feels more anthemic.
But still a good one, needs a few more listens

Yeah I think the production is a substantial step up from their other stuff

I've got Trust, Awe and Motionless up there too.

The closer gets me every time. Maybe it's just because the title track right before it is so furious and dark, but those big melodic riffs just sound tremendous

Trust and Motionless in Sky were the standouts to me. Thumb Spike certainly had a punch though too

@Projectfreak The closer took a bit to grow on me but I love it now, it wraps everything up in a really satisfying way while still being pretty open to interpretation.

It's really great but I'm not as in love with this one as their first. I miss when the band’s "idiosyncrasies were untempered." I'll give it another few listens to make sure. If I wasn't replying to the review I would have almost all positive things to say.

That's fair, I feel this album preserves a lot of what makes them unique while still sweetening things up a bit but if you were all about the all-out craziness of Chromaparagon this might not scratch that same itch.

After spinning this a good half dozen times, I feel like it's a draw between this and Chromaparagon for me. Chroma is more colorful (tonally and melodically IMO) and I really loved its chaotic weirdness. The songs were nuts and the riffs were all memorable, even when the vocals weren't the focus.
Crux is more tightly plotted, focuses more on the vocals, and the highs are incredible. Musketeers is my favorite song they've ever written, and Crux, Trust, Omega Days, & Awe have a new more focused energy that I really, really dig. Unfortunately there are about 4 songs on here that I find a little dull (by MT's high standards) with unmemorable vocal melodies.
Also, certainly not the most important factor, but Chroma's artwork was infinitely superior and was done by a design legend whose style I love. The Crux visuals are pretty meh, but that new symbol is cool.
At the end of the day I'll probably jam Crux more often though, because I have to be in a more specific mood for Chroma's prog, and this album is just so. damn. fun.

Honestly, I think they're gonna be a household name in the world of prog/metal/hard rock in the future. Hoping I can see them live in a small-ish venue sometime before they get huge (I'll still go see them even then, of course)
