combating all the dumb dangerous shit you say online with rational, logical, reasonable arguments isn't going to stop you from continuing to spread your dumb dangerous shit tho, or convince your audience that your shit is dumb and dangerous. That's like the ben shapiro "debate me, libruls!" bit, like it's going to convince anyone. It won't. The only thing you can do is take the largest platform available for those people to spew their nonsense and remove them from it. Sure, it pushes them to other venues but it fundamentally affects their reach, which is the best we can hope for outside of directly breaking their fingers so they can't operate a camera anymore.

this is an interesting topic. do you guys think that kind of censorship actually makes a dent in the circulation of the ideologies in question? obviously youtube can rightfully blot out whatever content they want, but i wonder if this impacts the traction of ideas at all, and in what way. it sometimes feels like it just gives the aggrieved party more ammunition and reason to be adversarial, but i guess you could argue that those feelings probably predated the censoring, hence the viewing of radical content.

Censorship is most of the time a very effective tool tbh.

Zaru, that's utterly cynical. Your argument boils down to people are inherently stupid and will be indoctrinated into any stupid ideology from fucking Youtube videos. While that's true to some extent, dumb people are going to dumb, what are you going to do about it? Removing them does way more harm than good.

Hal1ax, is that a joke? Of course it affects the circulation of ideas. Are you at all paying attention to what is happening on social media platforms? The irony is it's going to have the opposite of the intended effect, Trump is going to serve another term. Sooner or later these pro-censorship folks will realize that this conduct is self-destructive to them as well in the long term, it's not merely a one-sided weapon to be wielded against whoever they happen to disagree with. But time will tell I suppose...

i tend to think pushing ideas into the underground only causes them to fester there. it doesnt address the problem, it sweeps it under a rug. i say let them be out in the open. and then there's the fact that what you're essentially doing is silencing opinions you dont like, which sounds wrong no matter how you spin it. where does it end? slippery slope argument, i know, but some slopes are in fact slippery.

I love the evolution of neeka's avatar. It's just slowly gotten more weird and psychedelic over time.

I'll promise to be less of a bitch Hal if you promise to make a greater effort to follow current events. I think this will be an even trade-off.

also i realize it has an effect , i was asking if you / anyone thought it actually made a dent in the proliferation of the ideas in question or if you think the ideas just get allocated elsewhere without much significant decompensation

It obviously does. The Democratic Party is in ruins, they are spread from center all the way to the far left. They can't agree on anything including any meaningful policies to bring forward. Their candidates are absolutely awful and everyone knows it. So the left fringe activists pressure the tech-giants into banning people they don't agree with, and the tech companies fold. Because ultimately these 'journalists' are what bankrolls them, and they just care about $.

i think maybe there's miscommunication here. prob my fault.

ok so lets say there's 10 neo-nazi guys on youtube with relatively big followings. then let's say they all get banned - youtube / social media platforms expunged. so what i was asking was do you think something like this would actually then manifest in the form of appreciable declines in neo-nazi ideology in society? not over social media, but in the world. like will people who are attracted to this stuff find it or something similar regardless of degree of accessibility ?
