Yeah, there's some good tracks on BDT, mostly the singles

Goodbye Lullaby was far and away my favorite album of hers.

I always felt like she just stopped giving a shit around then and started going downhill tbh. Then again I used to say the same about the All American Rejects.

Eh I don't think she really went downhill until her s/t, I still dig about 4 songs from that album though.

What a perfect review! @SowingSeason, so you like Goodbye Lullaby? I think it was her most mature album so far. Did you write a review for it?

That album cover told me everything I needed to know about an Avril Lavigne album in 2019. Somehow manages to be totally unflattering.

Reminds me of Liz Phair's s/t album from 2003. Phair had swagger though.
Google tell me she was 36 at the time. DAMN! Avril's almost the same age as Phair when Phair put that out?!

Welp, this is sad.
Under My Skin was one of my favorite things when I was a lonely and angsty teen but looking back at it now it still feels genuinely inspired. I still have an original copy somewhere.
BDT and Goodbye Lullaby were fun records but with GL you could already tell she was running out of inspiration.

One of my highlights yesterday was seeing a dude with a mohawk rock out to Dumb Blonde on the Honda Stage live vid.

Lol that sounds so hilariously embarrassing.
Also metacritic quoted the final lines of my review (the "I deserve better" part) which is also pretty funny.

Yes it is a bit generic/dated in places, but I still find it to be an enjoyable album. Her strong vocals and melodies elevate it for me. My biggest complaint is the only Avril type rocking song is the Nicki Minaj collaboration (and while it's ok as far as Nicki collaborations go, it feels awkward).

Nice flaying Sowing! In a weird way, the review reminded me of Marilyn Manson's career. In the past decade, his lyrics have become similar to what a sad/angry teenager would write, whereas 20+ years ago he was successfully spitting vitriol towards Christianity or political parties IMO.

Thanks insomniac! It always feels good to rip into an album after writing so many consecutive optimistic reviews. I really wanted to like this; I just can't overlook the infantile lyrics no matter how much I try to ignore them and just enjoy the catchy melodies.

gotta say, that album cover is pretty aesthetic, especially from afar

This reminds me of Our Lady Peace sadly. Not the maturation part, as I think Raine is a good lyricist, but just the music progressively getting more disappointing. Their last effort was one the most disappointing for 2018 (in my opinion) and this one by Avril may be my most disappointing of 2019 It's harder when it's one of your favorite artists and you keep hoping this will be the release that redeems them.

never actually checked Our Lady Peace tbh

Their early stuff is good. Clumsy is their most popular album (I don't know if my smiley face is showing up but that's what it is)

The tick that bit her deserves a royalty check. After all, it helped Avril Lavigne to write her worst album yet...

under my skin should be remembered far more fondly than it is. that's up there with EMOTION as far as canadian female-fronted pop masterpieces in my books.
