No argument there, I love Crimson/Red almost as much as this. And yeah, I plan on reviewing those albums too )

Grief Built the Taj Mahal is one of the most beautiful songs ever

Yea I love that one. I look forward to reading a justification for a 5/5 rating for Gunman, given that Farmyard Cat exists.

I'd argue that Megahertz counts since Paddy always intended it to be a Prefab Sprout album, since that was the first of the albums to be just him essentially. Should have a review out in time for the reissue next week.

Farmyard Cat has a purely ridiculous chorus, agreed there no question. its probably the goofiest Sprout song there is. but there are some pretty spectacular moments even in that goofy track.

Gunman is actually pretty underrated, it’s their worst and pretty corny at times but over half of the songs are good.

I more meant if Megahertz counts as a newer album cause of the year it was released. Paddy writes almost all Prefab Sprout material since the 90s I thought, so Megahertz being a Prefab Sprout album makes sense even tho it’s not pop rock or anything like that.

Well, Paddy hated the notion that PS would only be restricted to just pop, since all their albums were very different from one another, so he thought it wasn't much of a stretch to go full-on modern classical/orchestral pop

But... Prefab Sprout are pop rock, and I Trawl the Megahertz is a pretty big departure. There's nothing wrong with pop, like Prefab Sprout are pop rock in the way that mid-late '60s Beach Boys and Beatles are pop rock.

"But... Prefab Sprout are pop rock"

this is the exact notion he didn't and still doesn't like, being pigeon-holed into a familiar sound and idea when his own writing will make it undeniably Prefab Sprout no matter what it sounds like. That's the beauty of Paddy's songwriting.

Sure but lots of bands reject genres and labels, doesn't mean people won't discuss styles and genres they hear in the music. It's part of how listeners establish context and appreciate it.

Pop is also such a universal term it almost doesn't have that much meaning when a band like this and Tears for Fears, along with the classic bands like Beatles, Beach Boys, and Zombies are called that when modern pop is a completely different thing.

i mean at the end of the day, if we're going to continue calling Megahertz a solo album, you might as well call this and everything after Andromeda Heights the same since it's just Paddy for the most part

My earlier comment on this page says exactly that:

I think it's silly though to pretend that Megahertz being a solo album doesn't make sense, like it's obviously completely different from Prefab Sprout. It doesn't make a difference to me if it's called a solo album or a Prefab Sprout album; I'm happy if this re-release will give it more exposure, cause it's an excellent piece of music, but I don't know why it needs a remaster as the original sounds perfect imo.

Well, I did probably miss that so my bad; and the original CD has been long out of print and in some cases, the CD doesn't even work due to old copy protection mucking up the product, so a reissue was definitely necessary. Terming it as a remaster is probably executives trying to get people to buy it, although if it's a legitimate remaster, I'll be pleasantly surprised, doubly so if it's good.

No prob and I didn't know all that, makes sense if the original is that rare. I have a digital copy from online somewhere cause I couldn't find it or their band albums on CD anywhere here in the US. If the remaster is as good or better, I'll be probably try to buy it and support Paddy.

The original CD's prices have gone down but apparently it used to be a bit more costly sometime around 2008-10, which is a contrast to when it was abundant in the cut-outs upon release.

I definitely don't think Prefab Sprout is 'pop rock'. Their first two albums are honestly prog as hell. And they've dabbled in many genres and experimented a lot. I always considered them a new wave group with an affinity for working other genres in with exceptional care and ease.

Plenty of pop groups from mid 60s-80s dabbled in experimentation and other genres, but I see your point. They are a very special and unique group for sure. I guess I'd call them art rock and new wave just as much as pop rock.

The closest musical comparison I can make is Steely Dan... But even they have their own thing going on. Prefab Sprout succeeded in creating their own sound that is immediately recognizable, at the very least.

Yea all while evolving over the years, especially beginning with Andromeda Heights. Perhaps because the band sort of became a new thing with the music pretty much written by Paddy.

I've been listening to Crimson/Red lately, loving a lot of it and setting my expectations for the new one pretty high.
