This was a pleasant surprise. I wholeheartedly agree with the band still sounding the same at the core despite the genre-change. Yes, the pop (and rap) moments hinder it a bit, but hell, they're still having fun and that careless attitude about what people think of them is kinda refreshing (see "heavy metal").

I can't settle on a rating for this, it's so all over the place

Oh god. Will give it at least one more listen some other time with a clear head but might drop it to a 1.5.... seems like they have no idea what they want the album to be

I'm thinking a 4, maybe a 4.5, just gotta decide if I prefer this to There Is a Hell

Nocte: When's your review coming?
In all fairness (call this a cop out if you like) I don’t really want to. I mean I compared Sempiternal to a prostate exam and this is only marginally better.
The stuff I want to review this year is less in the ‘mainstream’ but I don’t want to find a niche or restrict myself in that sense. I may find myself reviewing this album, but I’m not going to go out of my way to revisit something (again) that’s this bad.

Nah i won't call it a copout. Was hoping for a solid negative review to counterbalance the two crap ones.

That is the correct review summary. I urged mason to use it but he didn’t, good to see someone’s on the correct wavelength.

as inconsistent as this album is (and given that some of the song really are terrible) I'm surprised that this isn't a trash heap overall. Nihilistic Blues is a real jam.

Real good review. I am absolutely enthralled with this album: Nihilist Blues, In The Dark, Ouch, S.H.I.T., and Why You Gotta Kick Me... are my favorite non singles so far. This album is so different from what I was expecting. I can’t believe they actually made something this eclectic.

I'm halfway through this and I'm really feeling optimistic about a fairly strong rating for this, totally taken back by this so far.

It's been really cool to watch you evolve as a writer, Simon. I'd say you're writing some of your very best reviews right now. Keep it up!
I also enjoyed That's The Spirit (although I realize how corny it is, so I always hesitate to admit it)...so with that said, I might be forced to give this a fair shake.
edit: one little thing I'd suggest, and this could just be a preference thing, but the "myself" in the opening paragraph reads clunky to me, maybe consider omitting to make it read more like this: "time has been very forgiving to That’s The Spirit – growing significantly over the years"

You're a big fan of poppy shit sowing this might appeal to your even more than TTS. I gotta admit I was fairly surprised by this myself.
