Was never that much into this guy, did enjoy The Colour in Anything but I bet this is gonna be lame.

"Don't Miss It" sounds like The Colour In Anything. The rest sounds like... something else.

On first spin I liked the last two songs the best I think...or maybe the album just warmed up on me.
The first two songs were a bit of a turn off on first impressions but we will see - the 2.5 is a holder right now. I'll stick my neck out and say this won't be anyone's AOTY though. Not even James Blake's.

Bottom of the barrel white boy soul pop
Jesus the lyrics on this thing lmao

There was one lyric that was particularly bad he said over and over somewhere in the middle of this thing :/

'I thought sex was at my pace, but I was wrong'
This just made me picture James having a really ill matched lover - like he's this sensitive sort, a bit mope-y, more of a 'passive' lover....and on top of him was a f'cking duracell bunny riding him like the clappers.
It never rains when it pours Blakey, it never rains when it pours.

Perhaps Blake seems too comfortable with his sound.
This. And good review.
As a casual JB fan I can't claim authoritative knowledge, but it seems as though his best work was towards the beginning of his career and since then he's just sorta poptimized & refined.

Overgrown is probably his best since it covers so much ground, but yeah before and after that album are mixed bags, even if I do love everything he’s put out.

fourth song was so nondescript and got locked in a holding pattern - had to skip last 60 seconds, sorry Jasmes
So far:
Assume Form [2.5/5]
Mile High [2/5]
Tell Them [2/5]
Into the Red [2/5]
Barefoot [1.5/] ("barefoot in the park and you start rubbing one off over me" - a new standard for lyrics in 2019 has been set)

I think his self-titled is both the best thing he's done and the thing that ruined his career tbh

I actually dislike the debut - I liked about 50% of each of the last two albums though, and the remainder of them was usually ok
Half of the debut makes my skin crawl...half of this one makes me check the furr on my teeth, sugary, acid reflux-y

My first listen impression was the second half of this was MUCH better so let's hop that holds true or a .5 rating drop will be incoming

Reddit (Indieheads) is loving this shit. Sputnikmusic is generally more predictive of my tastes, but I'd love to actually like this and tell all of you off.
I thought The Colour In Anything was generally mindblowing but sabotaged by sprawl. This record seems to be a touch more concise.

I also think, unquestionably, his debut is the best record he'll probably ever make. I would like to hear more about how it has ruined his career.

I think the oversaturation of his singing that the s/t started led him astray personally

That's interesting. He's, no question, a near flawless producer, but he'd just slide into a mold of a thousand different artists without that element. The soulful singer/songwriter approach he takes to electronica has always been what's set him apart.

Next three:
Can't Believe [2.5/5]
Are You in Love [1.5/5] blaaaaaand
Where's the Catch [4/5] not perfect but the most interesting track so far by a mile
|
| |
I just think his melodies have become more and more sanitized and boring
