I mean some of the filler tracks at the back end of this record sound close to post reunion Take That - not my thing at all, but then I wouldn't expect the latest Take That album to receive 99% scores on Metacritic is why I'm here

Agreed Con. I slightly prefer their last album because I think the highlights are better, but this is still very fun and noticeably more consistent.

At the very least we may agree that this is their best album.

their last album is way too long tho and this is still kinda long but has noticeably cut out some of the filler and replaced it with some impressive ~experiments~ for them at least

I find em pretty forgettable, and their fanbase makes me cringe. It’s less the publications fault and more their social media following.

Might check this album, but eh

I think people who enjoy this music and those who talk shit about it is drawing the distinction between those who enjoy really obscure, trying-to-be-new-by-copying-less-often-copied-artists bullshit lovers and people who can simply enjoy good songwriting that doesn't have the complexity or obscurity. Writing good music without a point in mind like being shreddy or obscure or complex is insanely difficult. That's why you see so much bullshit music churning through pop culture. These four guys by themselves have written an album that countless other top 100 pop groups use armies of pop songwriters to get into the stadiums. If you can't enjoy pop as a whole then this band simply is not for you. There are good and bad iterations of pop just like any other genre. *shrug*

Since my last listen to this (fourth overall) last night before deleting, I can remember "Why can't we be friends, (something_something) lovers" and the single-line hooks of "Love It If We Made It" and "Inside Your Mind" and that's about it, so you know... for a pop record its not all that memorable really.

Its very difficult to find enjoyment in something tailor-made to appeal to as many people as possible, and so inevitably compromising everything interesting so as to not alienate anyone.

But than it depends on what you mean by "pop", The Beatles, The Smiths, and Nirvana are pop alright.

"It's a good album."

Agreed

I would just make a playlist of this album that leaves out the 6 ballads (even though a couple are pretty good) and call it a day. The other tracks are good though, including TOOTIME and It's Not Living which are my two favs.

Genuinely curious...what caused people to have such a negative opinion about the fanbase?

Most impressive con job of the year. Poptimism has gone too far when we act like this above the corporate pop of Imagine Dragons / The Chainsmokers instead of the same ol’ shit. The haphazard track sequencing isn’t a commentary on existing in 2018, it’s a self-indulgent band falling on their face while crafting a Statement Album. The response by critics is effectively a disinformation campaign that creates a reality where this is ‘radical’ art instead of completely vapid music posing as such. In the bin.
