Guess I'll have to listen to it before I say whether I agree or disagree with that statement. Though from what I've heard from this album so far it sounds fantastic (production-wise).

I love Ballou's production but I also understand the complaints against him. I assume the albums where his production truly stands out are the albums he actually wants to work on and enjoys working on, as opposed to just being a job.

Can agree about the dark hardcore/any hm2 band he produced. I was going to mention Trumpeting and Hiss Spun, he still has a lot of tricks up his sleeve.

Ballou's production career has definitely hit a second phase where a lot of recent work sounds fairly similar. Most big producers end up settling on a signature sound that's fairly recognizable. Andy Sneap, Jens Bogren, Colin Richardson, Tue Madsen, etc. these guys have characteristics that are recognizable across a lot of their catalogs.
Ballou's a much better producer, but he's gone through something similar to Dan Swano, who had a bit of a rawer characteristic sound in the 90s, and now has a different but again very samey production style in his newer work.
It takes a big budget for a band to pay a producer to really get creative with the recording, since you'd have to take a ton more time in the studio and they almost have to get involved in the songwriting process.

This, most of his work seems to me (Trap Them, Oathbreaker, Idylls, recent Darkest Hour etc) caters to a lot of what the bands want, which is, ironically, his typical sound.

Somehow I forgot that Ballou did Eros/Anteros and not Jack Shirley

Good grief the new single is fucking horrible. It sounds like they want to be part of the new wave of black metal with bands like deafheaven.

anyway I have the album now and it really sounds like anthony could have a nice singing voice, but it’s just not there right now. he’s too much at the forefront of these these slower songs and sticking to: achlys and a world of joy back to back was a horrible idea. I really want to like this album but not sure I am/will

Although I don't fully agree (its kinda forced) and don't think they're horrible by any means, I got Doctuses comparison in some echoed blackcore melodic soundscapes.
