This is an interesting mish-mash of ideas, reminiscent of Rolo Tomassi’s album in the abrupt stylistic changes, namely the odd juxtaposition between the more atmospheric & heavier moments. I’m not saying it actually sounds like Rolo (someone is bound to take that out of context).
Strong vox, nice atmosphere & I like the implementation of the synths. What I’m not sure about is the djent riffs (I could see that coming a mile away), thankfully they don’t completely ruin the record for me.
Looking forward to round 2.

always wary of reviews that mention "maturity" in prog as a positive aspect. if a band has exuberance, energy and whimsy, and all the bandmembers have something to say then the last thing I want them to do is place restraints on that and streamline an entire dimension of their potential away

Live they played Alien Shivers, Smartfiend, Ghosts and Whaler
When compared to the older tunes on Inmazes, yes they were heavier but I'd say the new ones are tasteful.
Also their new drummer is much better than the former drummer, some parts on the disc are actually quite quite quite complex

This is pretty sweet. I love every song except the title track and Whaler, which are "just" pretty good but a bit unmemorable. I reckon that will change with repeated listens. Can't wait to see them with Monuments in a couple of days.

Yeah, the drums are probably my favorite thing about this (Smartfriend verses for example).

Except that the review says literally the exact opposite of what you think it does. The maturity on this album isn't about streamlining away an entire dimension. It's adding new dimensions.

Interesting. There's a ton of great stuff on the album, but from 2:12 onwards of the title track is easily my favourite part of this album.

Boy. I won't ruin the average by rating this, but I've learned that I thought I liked most prog metal and apparently I don't. This...is exceptionally boring and the cheesiest, most self-serious, nose-in-the-air thing I think I've ever heard. Ooof. "Alien Shivers" and "Still" don't suck, though. 2.5/5. 2 because the drummer is playing for a different band than the rest of the members (really good stuff wasted here), and .5 is because the production is solid.

I can't. It would hurt my conscience to be contrarian for contrarian's sake. That said, I felt like I had to get my opinion out there because I feel it's useful to have dissent if it exists. Otherwise, it's just a circlejerk.

Give this a few more spins, if you can be bothered. Vola usually needs some time for me to really enjoy.

I might return to it later, just to see if I still feel the same way. I have changed my mind before, so who knows?
