I really do not enjoy this album at all, and that's disappointing as their early stuff still absolutely slaps

I hate to use buzzwords like "sellout" but... They definitely sold out. Traded in every bit of originality they had so they could get mainstream attention like being played during televised sporting events and such. Good for them with the popularity and wealth they may gain, but shame on them for trading in authenticity for fame. Every song on this album is a bore.

Ridiculous how much better Overthinking sounds in context of the album.

I never get shaming people for entering an entertainment business and wanting to use their talents to make money.

this is far from a "sellout" album tbh

Lol yeah if anything this is more of a risk than Dissonants or even Unimagine was.

I like this album and I'd still put it in the "sellout" territory you're referring to. It's hard to not when you go from something fairly experimental to radio rock. Although, I do think this is the music they genuinely wanted to make. I feel like they could have totally just made another Unimagine while maintaining the popularity increase but that's clearly not the route they wanted to go down.
and wow, they really don't play anything from Ground Dweller anymore it seems. It's been 2 years since they've touched Lion Skin

I wouldn't call this a risk. Dissonants is the only one of the 3 albums they released since their debut that felt out of nowhere. this seems like a pretty natural progression from that coming from the guys that also wrote Unimagine. the past 2 albums show a clear interest in pop rock and I feel like here is where they decided embrace that in every possible way they can think of.

seriously though ^
and honestly, technicality aside, the hooks are still waaaay better on Ground Dweller.

After a few listens the front half of this is so much stronger than the back half its actually kind of depressing. Tilt is the only song I really like from tracks 6-10.

disagree hard. Black and Bad Dream are jams with Half-Hearted being pretty solid too. I'd remove Tilt entirely

Half-Hearted is probably my least favorite HLH song actually. Black is pretty nice (and something new) though.
I used to dislike Monster and be ambivalent towards Tilt but I actually think they're highlights now in the grand scheme of things.
I put a review for this in my school paper and I'll probably post it here too if I'm allowed to publish it in multiple places.

wasn't especially impressed by this one, getting the feeling that Unimagine is their one-hit record.

Idk how anyone can remember anything on ground dweller when it has zero hooks and bipolar production
