This year has been pretty dry, so this is up there tbh. This has grown more than I expected, might bump it later.

Contrary to the breadth of reviews that laud the album, this short review in Metal Invader crystallizes some of my thoughts about it, although I think it fares much better than the annointed 3.5/6 (approximately 3/5) rating. Too bad that unlike the Greek version, the English version of it has bumps along the way, while being read.

In better English, and without sacrificing the fine points of the text, it would read as follows:

--

Almost always, an individual's behaviour and modus operandi is his/her calling card. Take Donald Trump for instance; he swayed the American people about his way, with his grotesque and shocking speech, to the point where his shenanigans are naturally expected of him, whenever and wherever they take place. In an analogous, yet completely different setting, Voivod have established themselves as a powerhouse of innovation in metal since the late '80s. And yet, what Meshuggah roared in one verse in Catch 33 - "the struggle to free yourself from restraints, becomes your very shackles" - seems to describe perfectly the comings and goings of The Wake. A mix of Target Earth with Dimension Hatross and Nothingface, Voivod's new album is hardly a breakthrough, especially since it is so firmly attached to the band's days and works during the late '80s. While some of the tracks truly shine in their simplicity ("Obsolete Beings", "Orb Confusion"), the deliberately complex structure of others ("The End Of Dormancy", "Incospiracy", "Event Horizon", "Always Moving"), does not go hand in hand with their prolonged temporal length. The above said, the sound work is superb and on par with the band's progressive rock demeanour.

The text and rating deals with the album as if it is an instrumental one; save for the reviewer's favourite tracks (my own as well), the music is indeed a 3/5, but Snake's vocals are among his best yet, hence my 3.5+/6.

I'm no Voivod expert but I absolutely love The End Of Dormancy.

^^I'm no Voivod expert either, I only know what I like and don't like when I hear it.

I posted this review here, solely because it is one of the few (if not the only) (token)s of scepticism about the album, over the net.

Cool. This may be a situation where they have done that song better in their older work. Although I've come across their material quite a bit, this is the first Voivod album to really grab me.

The only 'gripe' I have with this is it may be too much of a Dan Mongrain album. Iconspiracy even seems to wander off into Martyr-era tech death territory. On Target Earth he still had Blacky to deal with, since Post Society the dominant musical stamp is definitely his. But it's all good.

Surprised to see Voivod rate this lower than Target Earth. I'd say this one is better.

^^Well, I feel that - I could be wrong though - this album tries to be everywhere legacy-Voivod and ends up rather short in the process, for me at least.

No other Voivod album - even the late '80s behemoths - has tried to be in more than one place. That said, Target Earth feels more balanced and focused in terms of its general echo.

Also, Target Earth had a dipole at the song writing helm, Mongrain and Blacky, this one however, has been wholly carried out by Mongrain, and the difference is perceivable, at least for me.

I love the sound in here, I love Snake's vocals and their ethereal texture (Target Earth should've had the same sound work for Snake's work therein), plus 2-3 songs, the rest of the album is not bad at all, but I'm having relative trouble spinning it from start to finish.

I feel of all the ‘80s metal bands I grew up with and are still around today, only Fates Warning sound better.

I like Mongrain overall and his overall style seems to complement the overall sound of the band well, but I can understand some of the gripes people have with this album.

Stellar release, but it's less of a collaborative effort than a Dan Mongrain opus.
