the riffs on here are crazy. never heard guitars like this. if i like this, what else would i like by these guys? i thought their old stuff was ok.

Check out Tartget Earth and the Post Society EP, those along with The Wake feature Daniel Mongrain on guitars. But also you should definitely check out their old stuff again, Killing Technology, Dimenion Hatröss and Nothingface are all considered classics and Piggy’s guitar playing on those was a big influence on Daniel Mongrain.

ok thanks

Their discography is kinda wild and there are several pretty distinct eras. For example their first two albums sound like Venom with some very slight psychedelic stuff going on. Angel Rat and The Outer Limits are a bit more alternative sounding but still have progressive tendencies, Negatron and Phobos are very industrial and groove-oriented, and the three after that are a bit like Motörhead.

sounds like they are all over the place.

Yea they’ve had a few phases. Personally I think their 87-89 albums are the best with their most recent two coming close, but everything they’ve done is worth checking out

yea the undisputed best shit is killing tech, dimension hatross, nothingface

Agree but the early stuff with spaced out punky thrash of motorhead meets dark angel with hints of King Crimson angular riffing is really underated. Snake's performance on both War and Pain and rooar is unhinged as well with quasi death growls at times

But yeah the 3 album run you mentioned is legendary. The stuff with Dan Mongrain is mindblowing too. The Wake will prob end up at 4.5 for me it's the most diverse and ambitious music they ever made
|
| |
Not gonna lie, The Outer Limits has climbed quite high into my personal rankings lately. Might even be top 5

Wouldn't call this the most ambitious stuff they made, I think Dimension Hatross and Nothingface got that covered. This is more or less taking the prog elements from those albums with the modern voivod sound.

I don't know man, I mean have you ever heard acoustic guitar, string arrangements, timpani percussions, blast beats and so much more into a single Voivod album?
I agree about it being an all era Voivod album with emphasis on the prog elements channeled with a modern sound, but somehow it still makes it their most ambitious because of the diversity and sheer craziness of the arrangements

Yeah, that's kinda true. But let's not forget something as crazy as the whole concept of Dimension Hatross or like half the songs on Nothingface. They have always been kinda ambitious, so I see those new elements just being Voivod. But I can see your perspective, there is some crazy shit on here.

Agreed
-- I mean have you ever heard acoustic guitar, string arrangements, timpani percussions, blast beats and so much more into a single Voivod album?
Those string arrangements rub me the wrong way, with all analogies accounted for, they remind me of late '70s progressive rock bands going too far with orchestras and such, right before punk's coming.
I don't want to see Voivod become like recent Opeth/Enslaved etc.

"I don't want to see Voivod become like recent Opeth/Enslaved etc."
No risk there at all, I reckon. Don't feel it that way. This is really good but definitely has the Mongrain stamp.

anyone got this as best album of the year right now? really amazed at the songwriting
|
| |
Not quite my AOTY I don’t think but it’s up there for sure
