"I like the opener but can’t help but feel like it’s too similar to the Ladies and Gents opener/title track (melody, structure, chord progression) for its own good. Maybe an intentional homage/call back to that track?"

Yeah, most likely, especially after playing that album in its entirety for the 20th anniversary. He mentioned a couple of years ago I think he was inspired by Ladies and Gentlemen. Meanwhile, you should listen to (at least) Let it Come Down and Sweet Heart Sweet Light. Then you'll see the transitions to this record's sound.

@Voivod - Thanks for posting the article. I only read a couple of interviews posted a few weeks ago, however, not this one. He always sang about sad/dark topics and felt as if he was dying (he almost did a couple of times), so I hope he doesn't quit releasing LPs.

I'm sort of divided really, it's definitely a bit too snoozy in spots and the songwriting's not terribly interesting but it's very comfy, makes me feel good; it's soothing.

I like this a lot. It sounds like a Spiritualized album no doubt (and lots of callbacks to L&G), but since it's their last I think it makes sense.

Great album, as usual. He said the previous one was gonna be the last too, anyway...so I don't believe him!
