“Summer Years” and “60 & Punk” are both really really good.

what this record ultimately lacks is Walla’s instinct for when a bit of grit and variation is necessary
This really hits the nail on the head. Pleasantly (lightly) surprised by this as I am, I always knew Walla’s leaving would be the band’s ultimate death sentence. He was always the musical core of the band, the essential counterpart to Gibbard’s poetry. Probably the band will hang around for another decade at most, pump out a few more halfway inspired pleasantries like this, and then quietly disappear.

This is definitely better than I thought it’d be. 60 & Punk, Summer Years and Near/Far are fantastic. It’s anazing how they picked the worst for singles (although I don’t mind the opener)

Yeah the singles were extremely misleading, “Gold Rush” especially. The highlights here are about as good as those on the other 2010s albums but this is slightly more consistent throughout.

"The highlights here are about as good as those on the other 2010s albums but this is slightly more consistent throughout." Yeah, after some listens, this is exactly how I feel. The consistency makes it worth it. I don't even mind Gold Rush within the context of the album.

yea this is their most consistent since narrow stairs but id say kintsugi has better high points prob, except maybe 60 and punk
either way, codes and keys is worst

The first half of Kintsugi is great, but then it just drops -- even the beautiful closer couldn't save it.

yeah I think everyone was expecting this to be really bad with Walla gone and how their albums have been declining in quality as of late but idk I kinda liked this overall on first listen.

Kintsugi and Codes I will say were a bit less “safe” than this is, those at least had a decent amount of diversity in songwriting/musical style whereas this is kind of all the same, playing to their comfort zone (or at least as comfortable as they can be while missing a key member of the group).

band's like Tycho, they're never going to do anything more than inoffensively pleasant, but at this point I'm ok with it

First three songs, Northern Lights, and the closer are very good. This band has been very consistently average all decade.

Can we talk for a moment about you moved away? Easily top tier Death Cab right there.

this new song Kids in '99 is pretty tight

Yo that new EP is actually kinda great, maybe their best release this decade, and it doesn’t just sound like outtakes from this. I gotta say I keep wanting new Death Cab to be worse than it is, even without Chris the boys can still pump out some good stuff.

Ben just dropped a nice little song called “Life in Quarantine”. The title is a bit on the nose but it’s actually a very pretty acoustic number.

This is pretty decent, better than their last album anyways. Just wished it made me sadder... It just makes me feel warm and chilled, which is fine.
