Ok, three songs into 'Sargasso Sea' and it feels like nutrient rich human blood is pumping through the band, and the singer seems like she knows she's in the band - this album by comparison is more like a black and white photo of a jazz club or maybe Luna Park somehow reanimated but everyone is now a corpse.
Actually, that makes this album sound too interesting :D
I guess horses for courses, but I'm not always a massive fan of 'haunted house/grainy relic' albums
Tindersticks definitely took some ideas from this band on their more soundtrack-y recent albums I'd guess. What I've heard so far I wouldn't really think of as 'post-rock' though it is experimental :/

"Soundtrack music is like non copyright music or background music."
I really disagree with this. Soundtracks can be incredibly engaging and totally unique, they don't have to be elevator music.

Most soundtracks are significantly weak listened too outside the context of the source material. Bar Ennio Morricone, there are not many soundtracks I would listen to for pleasure.

you guys are right in that this is nothing and a total cheap shot compared to their earlier works

check Helium or North Pole Radio Station to find the genius of this group. evidently they just went a lazier route for this release.

I really need to get into their earlier stuff then because I don't care what you guys say, this album is excellent and truly different.

it is good, no.doubt, but i see where the complaints are coming from. their earlier works are far better imo when compared with this.

That's always the issue reviewing something as a newcomer. I'll still always enjoy this but looking forward to this allegedly incredible discography.

I did enjoy 'Sargasso' a bit more than this, gave it two back to back listens - 3.5-4 rating
They're sort of The Raincoats meets Stereolab meets Blonde Redhead with some extra jazzy stuff
I don't think they're my new rock saviours but there's something there

Listening now - reminds me a bit of 'Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished' in places, though this has a better sound than that album for my tastes. It's intriguing for sure, very lo-fi and music box-y.
I did really like 'Sargasso' though so still no idea what will end up this band's style I most gravitate towards.

Ok I've been waiting for an insta-5/5 tune from this band and 'Blue' is absolutely incredible.
This may sound silly but I'll always give an album from 1994 more of a chance than an album from any other year because of this ridiculous RYM list:

Seriously, there's something up with 1994

This comes across as a bit flimsy/cheesy at first, but if you can look past the baring trumpets and such, there's a ton of cool stuff happening...I personally don't care whether or not it lives up to their previous opuses.
Thanks Con, BB :-)

Thistledown is such an eerily pretty song, same with Shadow in Twilight
Love Owen's reserved vocal style
