"Call Me" was a good closer. It may have been a tad overdone, but it's one of their better orchestrated tracks. My favorite Shinedown song is "Through the Ghost," another one of their contemporary masterpieces. It's a shame it was on an otherwise hit-or-miss album, but I think the concept of Amaryllis worked through the mess.

Yeah Amaryllis really grew on me as a whole. Through the Ghost is extremely underrated. The title track remains one of their very best songs for me.

The guitar work and vocals are amazing on "Through the Ghost." They rarely play it because Brent Smith has a personal connection to it. It's probably their most sincere ballad.

Amaryllis had some of their best material on it, what hurt that album is it also had some of the worst. The last 5 tracks on that album are fantastic though.

This has grown on me. First listen was eh, second made me want to hear it again, and now on the third I really enjoy it.

I'll probably review Amaryllis tomorrow. It works and it doesn't. It's a weird one for sure, but it stands on its own two feet. This one, though, is a bit harder for me. I want to like it but it gives me no reason to. It goes against all of my standards.

Even though I'm slightly disappointed at the overall reception here (2.9, boo), I did expect this to garner somewhat mixed reactions. Amaryllis also got a lukewarm reception but I'm looking forward to your review, especially your take on Through The Ghost.

Also, as promised, here's my song ranking for Attention:

1. Brilliant 5/5

2. Special 5/5

3. Kill Your Conscience 4.5/5

4. Creatures 4.5/5

5. The Human Radio 4/5

6. Devil 4/5

7. Black Soul 4/4

8. Get Up 3.5/5

9. Attention Attention 3.5/5

10. Monsters 3/5

11. Pyro 3/5

12. Evolve 2.5/5

13. Darkside 2.5/5

14. The Entrance n/a

The main theme for me is that basically every song here is good/listenable. Only a small handful of average tracks worth skipping.

Nice to see the "Through the Ghost" love! I also thought For My Sake was really underrated

I would've ranked 'KILL YOUR CONSCIENCE' a lot lower. Otherwise your ratings are fair I guess.

Kill Your Conscience and Devil were standouts on my first listen. Haven't gotten around to the second yet

I've listened to it 3 times so far. Not my thing; that's all I can say. 'Human Radio' was the only one I was consistently fine with. It's not a great song, nor would I add it to my playlist, but it stands out from the rest of the album. The other songs are mediocre to lazy at best. The lyrical and musical direction this album took is strange. I don't know what they're trying to gain from modernizing post-grunge.

I wish they'd have continued the Amaryllis direction rather than "selling out" a bit on these last two

They're fighting the never-ending battle of trying to make post-grunge relevant again.

I never really thought of them as post grunge. More just "2000s Rock"

Their first 2 albums were more in line with the post-grunge scene going on. A lot of critics described those as nu-metal. I'm not sure where they got that form, but whatever the case, they always seemed more alternative/post-grunge to me. "Sound of Madness" was more mainstream rock as well as everything after. They had a more mature sound which played into their benefit.

nu-metal is a piss-poor description for their early days. southern emo-rock is accurate without needing any additional descriptors.

also droptune, since I know you dislike this album, did you at least enjoy Brilliant? that song has emerged as my clear favorite here and one of their better tunes in general.

Well shit! This is a surprise considering they haven't made a good album since Sound of Madness. I might check this out.

Nu-metal is a crappy description for Shinedown. When I would play Rock Band, I would always see their songs listed as nu-metal. It made no sense to me. Brilliant worked as a closing song for the album. It had a big dynamic sound. I couldn't help but notice a slight punk tone for this song. It seemed a little out of place in the context of the album, but I felt it was okay. I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it again, but for what it was, it worked. It had a bright tone, huge hook, moving lyrics as simple as they were. I liked the solo part of it. The slides up and down the neck were a nice touch.
